Taco Bell Is Answering Fans’ Prayers With The Return of a Y2K Classic: ‘The OG Is So Fire’

Taco Bell is officially bringing back one of its most iconic Y2K-era menu items, and I couldn’t be more excited. The legendary 7-Layer Burrito, a fan-favorite vegetarian option that disappeared from menus in 2020, is making its return, and fans (including me) are already losing it. The Decades Y2K Menu is landing on Tuesday, Sept. 9

If you never got the chance to try one back in the day, let me set the stage. The 7-Layer Burrito was basically Taco Bell’s version of a handheld seven-layer dip. Imagine a soft flour tortilla packed with refried beans, seasoned rice, cool sour cream, creamy guacamole, crunchy lettuce, juicy tomatoes and a gooey three-cheese blend. Each bite has this perfect balance of textures, and even though its totally meatless, it feels like one of the most satisfying items on the menu. Honestly, it was my go-to late-night order for years, and when it disappeared, I was devastated.

The burrito first hit the menu in 1993 and quickly became a staple for vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. I’m not even vegetarian, but I’ve always loved Taco Bell’s meat-free options, and the 7-Layer was the gold standard. It wasn’t just filling, it was also insanely customizable. Taco Bell has always encouraged fans to remix their menu, and this burrito was the ultimate canvas. Want a spicy kick? Add jalapeño sauce or Diablo. Craving extra creaminess? Double up on the guac or swap in nacho cheese. Even the simplest tweaks made it feel like your own personal creation.

That flexibility is part of why it’s become such a nostalgic cult classic. When Taco Bell streamlined its menu in 2020, the 7-Layer was one of the casualties, and fans were not happy. Since then, people have been recreating it at home or hacking the current menu to get close. But no matter how close you get, it’s just not the same as unwrapping that foil and holding the real thing.

Now, with its official comeback, it feels like Taco Bell is finally answering years of fan prayers. And the best part is that the 7-Layer Burrito is still one of the best deals on the menu. At $2.49, it’s cheaper than most fast food burgers and, honestly, so much more filling. For anyone who is trying to cut back on meat (or is a vegetarian or vegan), it’s also a super satisfying option that doesn’t feel like a compromise.

Personally, I can’t wait to walk into my local Taco Bell and order one again. I’m already dreaming up different ways to customize it, from adding creamy chipotle sauce to adding in extra black beans for a little extra protein. Whether you keep it classic or build your own remix, the 7-Layer Burrito is proof that sometimes the simplest ideas are the best ones.

After years of waiting, I’m on my way to get one ASAP. Taco Bell, welcome back the OG. This one one really is so fire.
