The Tempest Layer is the ninth layer you’ll visit in Donkey Kong Bananza, and like all the others, it’s full of Banandium Gems. You’ll need to make use of the Elephant Bananza you get on this layer to grab a ton of them, which are locked behind the new mechanic of gulping down dangerous terrain types.
The Tempest Layer is inhabited by elephant people who are going through some extreme weather conditions. There’s lava rain and thunderstorms that you’ll have to brave through in order to find your precious bananas and make it through the level.
Below, we list where to find all of the Banandium Gems in the Tempest Layer we’ve found so far in Donkey Kong Bananza. We’re still updating this guide with more golden bananas as we find them.
Sublayer 900 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 16 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 900 in the Tempest Layer.
#1: Stormed into the Tempest!

After you destroy the big watermelon in the Resort Layer, drop down into the hole to find this bunch of bananas.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Climb the stone elephant statue to the left of the layer’s entry point, and you’ll see gold lines indicating paths that floating cloud platforms follow. Throw terrain at the bottom of a platform to lower it, then use a hand slap to raise it back up again. (Midair hand slaps won’t work, so you have to actually slap the platform.) The tricky part is that if you lower the next platform above you before the one you’re currently on rises, the impact of your platform rising will make the next one go back up as well. One way to approach this is to tear off several rock chunks and take them with you as you make your way up by pressing R to drop them on the platform before you use a hand slap to raise it. The platform’s momentum will make the chunks fly into the air, so try keeping them flat on the surface and not too close to the edge. Repeat this method until you reach the final platform and the banana.
Alternatively, you can wait until you acquire the Elephant Bananza powers, then use its chunk-making ability to avoid having to do any of this. 🙂
#3: Tucked by the Tornado

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
On the outskirts of Mount Gusty Tusk, on the other side of the wall behind the getaway, there’s an area where a tornado appears and follows you. You will find this Banandium Gem inside a small opening in the wall.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
By breaking the door beside the Warp Gong, you access a portion of the map on the outside. On the lower level, there are two rainbow enemies. Make them get out of the ground next to the wall, but beneath a line of gold nuggets. Jump on one of them and grab a piece to fly upwards. Inside an opening at the top, you will find the banana.

The next three Banandium Gems are in the Liftoff Labyrinth ruin, which, if you’re facing the Elephant Elder in her chamber of the Forecaster Refuge, is to your right. This first banana is your reward for making it halfway through.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
The ruin’s hidden banana is after the halfway point, at the end of the part where you grab liftoff ore from sinking pillars. There’s a small opening at the top right of the wall at the end. Sink the last pillar until the liftoff ore is barely above the lava, grab a chunk, and immediately start angling DK toward the wall. You’ll reach the opening and can drop the ore before DK gets near the lava on the roof.

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
You’ll get this banana after completing Liftoff Labyrinth.
#8: Elephant Elder’s Secret Snack

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Climb the wall behind the Elephant Elder where there are three shelves of books. After the third, there’s an opening and a cracked wall. Break it to find this banana.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
There’s a Growtone above the room where the Elephant Elder is located. You can climb up here by leaving the the Forecaster Refuge via the exit next to the getaway and just climbing up the walls. Feed the Growtone some gold to get this banana.
#10: The Hungry Tempest Growtone
Feed the Growtone more gold for this second banana.
#11: The Sated Tempest Growtone
Feed the Growtone even more gold (4,000 total) to get the third and final banana.
#12: Rain-Soaked Roughhousing

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Ahead of where you find the Growtone, you find a small arena where there are two enemies. Kill them and the next two waves of enemies that will appear to earn the Banandium Gem.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Punch through the wall of soft earth behind the Void Machine you have to dismantle to raise the caldera altar. Follow the tunnel until it dead-ends near a metal pipe. Punch down, then follow the path through some soft earth walls until you reach a more open room where the banana is.
#14: Tour through the Tunnels

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Punch through the soft-earth wall on the ledge in the room where you found the previous banana, and follow the burrowing Fractone through another series of tunnels. It’ll dump you out in a room with two antickoids. Defeat them, then punch through the wall on the left and continue following the tunnel and soft-earth walls. At the end, you’ll see a banana suspended from the roof, and a Fractone congratulating you on making it here.
#15: The Secret Lava Pocket

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Around the arena where you fight Blusterwing for the first time, there are two elephant trunk-like structures releasing lava. Between them, there is hole blocked by lava. You need to use the Elephant Bananza power to suck the lava out of the way and open the passage between the structures to find this banana.
These bananas are skipped on the collection screen, implying that they are locked as post-game content. We’ll update this guide with these bananas once we get there.
#24: Tempest Chip Exchange

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
At the Tempest Chip Exchange shop or a getaway concierge, trade Banandium Chips and gold to receive a banana. The amount required depends on how frequently you’ve used the chip exchange service before.
The Tempest Chip Exchange shop is on Sublayer 901, so if you’re in a hurry to do this, you can just the getaway above.
Sublayer 901 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 9 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 901 in the Tempest Layer.
#25: Beat Sinister Blusterwing!

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is waiting for you at the starting point of Sublayer 901 after you scare the Blusterwing off in pursuit of the Elephant Elder’s record.
#26: Battle: Revolving-Ring Rumble

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
You earn this banana by completing this battle challenge. The entrance for this challenge is located underneath a large umbrella to the right of the Lava Getaway. You’ll need to dig in the patch of dirt with the flower on top of it to get to it.
#27: Unbothered by Burrowers

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
You can find this banana while looking for the first half of the Ancient Record. Destroy a void machine that is next to a tall metal tower and, once the area is de-voided, go around the tower to find this Banandium Gem.
#28: Battle: Iron-Inferno Imbroglio

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Use a piece of liftoff ore to float to the small island above where you destroyed the void machine for the previous banana. Unseal the ruin, and head inside to face four sturdy Squeeloids. Knock them into the lava to defeat them and earn this banana.
#29: Safe from Scalding Showers

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
From the top of the metal tower where you entered the previous challenge, grab a piece of rock and throw at the gloo gum portion under the platform at other end of the zip line. Kill the enemies next to you to grab their rock and use it to zipline to the other platform. When you land on it, perform a Hand Slap to break the rock stuck below the platform, which will make it rise up. Go forward to find the banana.
#30: Lava Bath in the Hot Shower

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
From the facing the Lava Getaway, go left. There is a path going downward to an area filled with lava. You need the Elephant Bananza power to remove the lava and find the Babandium Gem at the end of the path.
#31: Piping-Hot Platforms

1/2Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
You can access this challenge course by going to the Ancient Record Crossroads, going next to the large metal tower, and looking toward the wall below. You need the Elephant Bananza power to enter this challenge. After the first set of rotating platforms, you can find this banana.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
During the above challenge course, when in the rotating crosses, go left instead of going straight towards the exit barrel. Clear the area and cross over the last platform to find the banana.
#33: Roasting while Rotating

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
You get this banana right when you reach the end of the challenge course.
Sublayer 902 Banandium Gems
We’ve found 37 Banandium Gems in Sublayer 902 in the Tempest Layer.
#34: Beat Sinister Blusterwing! Again!

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
After you defeat Sinister Blusterwing again, drop down the pipe to find this bunch of bananas.
#35: Taunting behind the Tap

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
From the Trunk-Dunk Hot Springs waypoint, turn to the right a large metal elephant face on the wall. If you look at its trunk, you’ll see that lava is blocking its spout. Transform into your elephant form and suck away the lava to allow water to drop down. Swim over to the banana underneath the elephant head and break the banana by punching upwards.
#36: A View of Zip-Line Valley

1/2Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Pay the Constructone 1,000 gold to open up the Zip-Line Valley Ancient Ruins.
Before you head down the first zipline, take out a nearby antickoid, and grab the rock it drops. Turn around and climb up the wall above the entryway, while still holding the rock. Once you’re at the top, you’ll see a zipline you can slide down using said rock. (You cannot use the dirt at the top, it’s not strong enough. Trust us.)
#37: Zipping Through the Ruins

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This is the second banana in the Zip-Line Valley Challenge Course, and you’ll run into it as you complete the level naturally.
#38: Zips, Hops, and Swaps

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is just sitting at the end of the course before the exit, as usual with these types of Challenge Course bananas.
#39: Tempest Smashin’ Stats

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Teeleport to the Jumbo Spa tuning fork and turn to the left to spot Smashintune beside two elephants chilling in an elephant trunk made of lava. If you’ve destroyed 70,000 cubic meters of lava, you’ll receive a banana.
#40: Sitting above the Sauna

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is found above the Smashintone in the Jumbo Spa. To reach this banana, turn into an elephant and suck up the nearby lava to reveal a climbable wall behind it. Climb up the wall and punch upwards to break a hole in the floor until you can get on the platform with the banana. Swing away to claim it.
If you’ve upgraded your elephant powers, your suction strength might suck up the floor under the banana as well, so be careful where you’re aiming!
#41: Tempest Hide and Seek
1/3Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Speak to the Fractone next to the lava sauna to get a vague idea of where the four hidden Fractones are.
One is covered in lava next to the gamemaster. The second is in a niche in a pillar across from the Jumbo Spa tuning fork. Another is masquerading as an ember in a brazier behind the Jumbo Spa tuning fork, and the last is in the right nostril of a stone elephant statue across from the sublayer’s entry point. You’ll need to use the Elephant Bananza’s suction power to “find” the two Fractones covered in lava.
#42: Cranky’s Tempest Rant

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
After you teeleport to the Trunk-Dunk Hot Springs, turn to the left to spot an entryway that leads outside of the spa. Head outside to find Cranky Kong sitting on a resort chair. Interact with him and listen to his rant to get a banana.
#43: Shifty Smash: Scorching Sauna

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Punch the shifty triangle next to the Sauna Getaway and then use Elephant Bananza to complete the challenge by sucking up all of the spawned terrain.
#44: Taking in the Stormy Scenery

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
On the upper level of the initial area in Sublayer 902, you’ll find a set of three platforms. You can chunk jump onto the first platform, but the other two seem impossible to reach. Transform into your elephant form and suck up enough material until you have at least three chunks in store. You’ll need to chunk jump up to each platform using your stored chunks, which you can bring out by tapping the ZR button. At the top, you’ll find a banana.
#45: Battle: Elevator Encounter

Graphic: Johnny Yu/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Before you ride the first zipline out of the Jumbo Spa, hop down and walk around the right corner to find the entrance to the battle challenge. Defeat the eight antickoids inside by lifting and dropping the goo glue platforms.
#46: Stuck in the Elephant Snout

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is sticking out of the stone elephant’s left nostril, like a nasty booger… Climb up the elephant from either inside the spa or from the outside to nab this banana.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Use a combination of DK’s Hand Slap with Elephant Bananza’s inhaling to get rid of the lava and scout out this banana that’s buried underneath. Be careful as you navigate around this maze, as the camera angles can get kind of wonky.
#48: Shifty Smash: Stairs in the Storm

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Hit the shifty triangle and then use Elephant Bananza to inhale the closests “steps” and then create chunks to throw at the ones out of reach to get this banana.
#49: Crossing the Lava Road

1/2Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is one of the rewards you’ll see as you complete the Challenge Course Hot-Lava Hotfoot, located directly above the Cliff-Edge Getaway. This one is skippable, but you’ll be able to see it on the side. Just remember to use your Elephant Bananza to suck up the lava to clear the path you took to this banana so you can continue on the track to the end of the level unscathed.

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
If you used the Elephant Bananza to suck up the lava as mentioned as part of the above banana, you can use your powers to create a chunk to Chunk Jump up on this platform to reach this banana. You can also get awkwardly pushed up here if the lava touches DK and he leaps in pain. (Do we know this from experience? Maybe so.)
#51: End of the Lava Road

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is just on the path at the end of the Hot-Lava Hotfoot Challenge Course right by the exit.
#52: Scorching, Shocking Scaffolds

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
As you cross this lava-stricken path during the main story, if you follow the left path instead of going straight, you’ll find this banana under some lava. You should already be in Elephant Bananza mode to suck the lava up off this path, so just continue sucking it up until the banana is unearthed.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is sticking out of the wall by the Big-Roof Shelter tuning fork.
#54: Banana in the Mud Bath

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
If you use DK’s Hand Slap, you should be able to see this banana underground ahead of the Big-Roof Shelter tuning fork. Dig straight down in front of the nearby sign to drop on this banana underground.
#55: Among the Rocky Elephants

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Climb up the stone elephants above the Big-Roof Shelter and dig straight down from the spot under the umbrella with the flower on it to find this banana in a cave.
#56: Battle: Ground-Gulping Glory

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Use your Elephant Bananza and entire this combat challenge. Suck up the ground beneath the three crockoids to make them fall and die like a Looney Tunes character to claim your banana.
#57: Tempest Fragmentone Recovery

1/2Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Help the Fragmentone get one fragment back to get this banana.
This Fragmentone banana requires a bit more patience than the others, though the fragments themselves aren’t in a hard-to-find place. Suck up the lava using Elephant Bananza and carefully escort the fragments on the metal bridge, being mindful of the thunderbolts coming down. The lightning will leave circles on the metal surface that the fragments cannot touch without dying, so be very patient and wait for them to disappear before proceeding.
#58: Tempest Fragmentone Restoration
Bring two more fragments back to the Fragmentone (so you’ve brought back all three) to get this banana.
#59: Secret by the Shelter

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Thie banana is in a blocked cave past the two gooey platforms near the Big-Roof Shelter tuning fork. You can see it behind the cavern entrance if you use your Hand Slap ability. Break the wall open across the way to grab it.
#60: Battle: Strike like Lightning

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Climb down the wall on the side by the two crockoids near the tower past the Big-Roof Shelter tuning fork. Enter this combat challenge and take out five rolluskoids for the banana.
#61: Halfway to the Station

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This is a banana you’ll run into as you progress through the story, at the top of the tower after you visit the Big-Roof Shelter.
#62: Battle: Zip-Line Zones

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Pay the Constructone 600 gold to remove the boulder blocking this combat challenge. Defeat the two crockoids inside for this banana.
#63: Concealed in the Sky

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Pay the Constructone 100 gold to add a zipline here and ride the zipline down. Jump off to land on the tiny island ahead to get a banana.

1/2Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This is the first banana you’ll get just by going through the Sharpshooter Scramble Ancient Ruins, under the Clifftop Shelter.
#65: Sniper-Free Safe Spot

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
To grab this banana, continue on the path right instead of going up. Don’t worry — you won’t have to backtrack after you grab the banana, as a barrel will fire you back to the fork in the road.
#66: Scramble through the Snipers

Image: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This is the final banana you’ll get right before the exit barrel for the Sharpshooter Scramble challenge.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
This banana is under the water. Dive punch down from the nearby cliff to smash it.
#68: Shifty Smash: Stormy Skies

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Break the shifty triangle to start the challenge and climb up on top of the liftoff ore. Pick up a chunk to fly up and break the metallic blocks at the top to earn your banana.
#69: In a Floating Puddle

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
Grab a chunk of liftoff ore by the zipline to float up to the island with this banana on it.

Graphic: Julia Lee/Polygon | Source images: Nintendo EPD/Nintendo via Polygon
As the name suggests, this banana is just sitting on top of the Stormy Station dome roof. Climb up there to grab it.
