The 1984 Rock Classic Often Mistaken for Bruce Springsteen Was Actually Don Henley’s Hit

It sounded like Bruce Springsteen.

It climbed the charts like a Springsteen, 76, song.

And more than 40 years later, plenty of listeners still assume it belongs to Springsteen’s catalog.

Instead, one of the most enduring rock songs of the 1980s was actually Don Henley’s biggest solo hit.

Released in 1984, “The Boys of Summer” became an instant classic thanks to its wistful lyrics, shimmering guitar riff and unmistakable heartland rock sound. The song’s reflective storytelling and Henley’s raspy delivery have long led fans to mistake it for a Springsteen recording, especially during the era when “Born in the U.S.A.” dominated radio.

But while the Boss was enjoying one of the biggest years of his career, Henley was carving out a lane of his own.

The song actually began with guitarist Mike Campbell of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers.

Campbell recorded the now-iconic instrumental track on a drum machine at home and originally hoped Petty would use it. When that didn’t happen, producer Jimmy Iovine played the demo for Henley, 79, who immediately connected with it and wrote lyrics about nostalgia, fading youth and the bittersweet feeling of looking back on a relationship that never quite left you.

“The Boys of Summer” climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 and won Henley the Grammy Award for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance. It also became an MTV favorite thanks to its striking black-and-white music video, directed by Jean-Baptiste Mondino.

The cinematic clip, filled with dreamlike California imagery, athletes and dancers, stood apart from many of the performance-heavy videos of the era. It ultimately took home Video of the Year at the 1985 MTV Video Music Awards, cementing the song as one of MTV’s defining moments.

Over the decades, “The Boys of Summer” has only grown in stature. The Ataris introduced the song to a younger audience with their 2003 cover, while Henley’s original remains a staple of classic rock radio, streaming playlists and movie soundtracks.
