There’s something magical and irresistible about McDonald’s breakfast, especially when you’re in a hurry. The unbeatable combination of taste, convenience and price is hard to ignore, and it’s safe to say that McDonald’s knows how to serve up a great breakfast.
The Egg McMuffin, with its perfectly toasted English muffin, savory Canadian bacon, freshly cracked egg and melty cheese, is a timeless go-to order. Craving something a little heartier? The Sausage Biscuit delivers buttery, flaky goodness with a slight spicy kick from the sausage. And no McDonald’s breakfast is complete without their iconic hash browns—crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, with a buttery finish that makes it the perfect handheld comfort food.
Whether you’re rushing to work or leisurely sipping coffee in the parking lot, McDonald’s breakfast is quick, consistent and always there when you need it. It’s the ultimate way to start the day right, but have you ever wondered how popular it is and what’s the best McDonald’s breakfast item on the menu?
Chef, author and content creator J. Kenji Lopez (@kenjilopezalt) shared his favorite McDonald’s breakfast order on The Recipe with Kenji and Deb, the podcast (@kenjianddeb) he hosts with fellow food pro Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen fame. We were surprised by Kenji’s choice, though we 100% support it.

Why the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit is the Best Breakfast Sandwich at McDonald’s
The number one selling breakfast item at McDonald’s is the Egg McMuffin, which is more than 50 years old! McDonald’s sells millions of these a year and the reason is simple—the breakfast sandwich is delicious!
Kenji said that it’s not his favorite item, though, nor is the second-best-selling breakfast sandwich, the McGriddle. He said the best McDonald’s breakfast sandwich is the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit.
Picture a warm, buttery biscuit with flaky layers that provide the perfect base for smoky, salty, crispy bacon. Next, a fluffy, savory scrambled egg followed by gooey, melty cheese ties everything together, giving every bite a harmonious blend of rich, salty and creamy goodness, with a perfect balance of soft and crisp textures. That’s exactly what a bacon, egg and cheese on a biscuit delivers and we love it!
Kenji said one of the reasons he likes this sandwich is that McDonald’s has perfected its fast-food eggs. “Whatever those weird folded egg omelet things that they have—maybe they come in frozen and are heated in the microwave—but they are perfectly dialed in and they taste exactly the same every time.”
And then there’s the biscuit. “They’re terrible biscuits by any standard, other than as a vehicle for a breakfast sandwich because they’re kind of like sturdier and crispier than a normal biscuit.”
He said the Bacon, Egg and Cheese Biscuit is the perfect sandwich to help with a hangover or to grab when you have to be at the airport early in the morning, and we have to agree. It’s not overly sweet (like a McGridle can be) and it’s not too hard to eat (like an English Muffin can be at times). It’s simply perfect!
Another reason to love it? A Bacon, Egg and Cheese biscuit at McDonald’s costs around $2.50 and clocks in at 460 calories.
