The ‘best meteor shower of the year’ is coming up and here’s how to view it in Canada

20 July 20263 Mins Read

Meteor showers can always be seen from the Dark Sky preserves in Canada, and this one is no different. It officially started on July 17, and the Perseid meteor shower is back for its annual visit.

From July 17 to Aug. 24, the Perseid meteor shower will be taking over the sky. With this shower, you’ll be able to see as many as 50 meteors per hour in rural areas and Dark Sky preserves. We’re here to let you know when the shower will be at its peak, where to see it best, and everything to know ahead of time.

Without further ado, let’s talk about one of the most spectacular astronomy events there is.

When is the best time to see the Perseid meteor shower?

The peak days when you’ll be able to see the shower are on the nights of Aug. 12 and Aug. 13. During these evenings, you’ll be able to watch what the Canadian Space Agency considers “the best meteor shower of the year.” What makes this even better? There will be a new moon on Aug. 12, meaning it’s prime time for viewing.

There are some tricks to being able to catch some of the meteors, however.

If possible, head away from city lights, which make it hard to see fainter meteors. This increases your chances of seeing shooting stars, meteors, and any sky activity.

In addition to that, turn off any and every light possible. Phones are going to be an absolute no-go this evening if you want a good view. If you need to use a flashlight, the Canadian Space Agency suggests putting a red filter over the bulb, as white light is very blinding and may affect your night vision.

Where can we watch the Perseid meteor shower?

If you’re looking to go to the best spot for the perfect view of this shower, we’ve got you covered. In fact, we’ve actually already compiled a list of all the Dark Sky preserves in Canada for your convenience.

If you aren’t familiar with the term Dark Sky preserves, they act as sites where light pollution is low, often a designated park or area outside major cities, allowing for optimal stargazing opportunities. This includes views of the moon, the planets, and constellations—and don’t forget meteor showers.

These places are going to be your best bet for getting the best look at this spectacular event. It’s going to be incredible, so mark your calendars for this annual light show.
