23 September 20253 Mins Read

The fall is in full swing, so let’s enjoy the outdoors before winter hits!

It’s the perfect time of year, and we’ve found the best trails around Edmonton to explore for the full autumn experience. The outdoors are transforming, leaves are turning into beautiful colours, and the weather is cooling down to a comfortable temperature, neither too hot nor too cold. September and October sights are truly something to behold in the city.

So, if you’re looking to get a good glimpse of the wondrous fall colours in Edmonton, here are some of the best trails to hit this season!

It’s a classic in the Edmonton area, it’s the Whitemud Creek Trail.

Taking an average of just under two hours to complete, the trail is approximately seven kilometres and takes hikers through the river valley. Here, visitors can walk along some of the most scenic natural paths in Edmonton. It’s stunning in the fall with all the leaves transforming the landscape, but it is also a popular snowshoeing destination.

For those new to hiking or looking for an easier trail, this is definitely the one to hit.

This 4.5 km loop takes hikers through an easy, picturesque path in the river valley, taking approximately one and a half hours on average.

In the first half of the trail, the ground is paved and accessible for all people. The Fort Edmonton Footbridge is an addition which connects all the trail systems and gives a spectacular view of the river valley. On the bottom half of the trail system, as you walk back, there is a packed gravel path that leads to the Whitemud Ravine or back to the parking lot.

Mill Creek Ravine is easily one of the most picturesque outdoor landscapes in Edmonton.

There are a variety of different trails you can take along Mill Creek Ravine, but doing a loop at this starting location will give you the best chance for the best views of the river valley. You can stumble upon bridges with beautiful creek sights and an incredible landscape. It’s a moderately rated hike, but beginners won’t find too much trouble.

It’s a short, easy trail that takes you through the neighbourhood. With numerous stairs and elevation changes, this short loop is ideal for a quick workout or a great trail to stop and take in the beautiful river valley. The time estimated is less than an hour, but you can take your time taking in the views.

Rundle Park is gorgeous in the fall, there’s no question about it.

It’s around 4 km of walking, but this trail takes you through incomparable sights along the river. Whether it’s sunrise or sunset, you’re going to have the perfect view on your hike. This hike includes both gravel trails and paved sidewalks, so be prepared.
