On the CBS daytime soap opera The Bold and the Beautiful, actor Scott Clifton’s character Liam Spencer was just diagnosed with a terminal brain mass. Fans immediately began speculating on what this could mean for Clifton’s career and whether he would return to his former soap home on ABC’s General Hospital. After weeks of speculation, the actor has finally addressed this possibility.
Speaking to Soap Opera Digest, Clifton answered the question head-on, stating, “No, I am not at all thinking about General Hospital or any other show. I’m just thinking about doing the best job I can do telling this story. That is what is important to me. I just want to do right by this show and this story and this storyteller — namely, Brad.”
Clifton assumed the role of young adult heartthrob Liam Spencer (then Cooper) in 2010 on the Los Angeles-based daytime drama. Clifton quickly became a fan favorite with his front-burner romantic triangle between stepsisters Steffy Forrester (Jacqueline MacInnes Wood) and Hope Logan (originally Kim Matula, now Annika Noelle). Clifton found himself within the top 5 appearances on the soap opera from 2011-2021, often ranking second in episode appearances (peaking in 2012, appearing in over 200 episodes).
However, a different story is being told in 2025 as the once front-burner character finds himself relegated to the sidelines with the actor appearing in just 16 episodes out of a possible 75 so far, meaning his character has only appeared in 20% of episodes, as opposed to his peak of 79%.
On screen, Steffy just shared the heartbreaking news with Liam that he not only has a mass on his brain, which explains his recent headaches and passing out, but that Finn (Tanner Novlan) and the rest of his medical team believe the mass to be inoperable. Liam is struggling with this revelation and must now figure out how to proceed.
Clifton’s soap credits also include playing Dr. Schuyler Joplin on One Life to Live from 2009 to 2010.
Fans will have to continue to watch to find out if this truly is the end of Clifton’s time on The Bold and the Beautiful, or just the beginning of his next storyline.
The Bold and the Beautiful airs weekdays at 12:30 p.m. EST on CBS and streams daily on Paramount+.
