The Calgary Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (May 26)

26 May 20264 Mins Read

Welcome to the Calgary Group Chat. If you’re new here, this is your weekly update on everything happening in Calgary, including new openings, events, and a few things to help you plan your week. And if you’re a weekly reader, welcome back! We’ve got some exciting things happening around the city to talk about this week.

Without further ado, let’s get into it.

What’s new, Calgary?

The city’s biggest taco takeover returns next week

Calling all taco lovers, this one’s for you. Taco Week is officially returning to the city next week, and restaurants across town are dropping limited-time specialty tacos.

Even better, you can pair them with margaritas while you’re at it, and $1 from every taco and margarita sold is being donated to local charities in Calgary, so you’ll also be supporting a good cause.

The Grey Eagle Resort and Casino is getting a makeover

If you’ve been to the Grey Eagle recently, you might have heard that things are getting a serious upgrade. The renovations include upgrading to a larger casino floor, a new bingo hall, and new dining spots, such as an Asian fusion restaurant.

Luckily, most of the resort will still be open while construction is underway, so you can still visit as usual. But one thing to note is that the buffet is set to close in August 2026, before eventually coming back once renovations are finished.

Calgary is back in its basketball era

Basketball season is only two days away. The Calgary Surge home opener is going down at WinSport on May 28 as they take on the Scarborough Shooting Stars.

If you haven’t been to a Calgary Surge game, this is your sign to add it to your list of things to do this summer because the atmosphere is so much fun, and the crowd is always getting fully into it.

Sunshine, patios, and probably a thunderstorm by 6 p.m.

Well, folks, the warm weather is really showing up this week. With weekdays reaching temperatures above 20°C almost every day, I think it’s safe to say that summer is almost here. But as every Albertan knows, when things start getting hot and humid around here, that usually means one thing: thunderstorm season is lurking right behind it.

According to Environment and Climate Change Canada, on Friday, May 29, temperatures are expected to reach a high of 29°C with a high chance of storms. So yes, enjoy the sunshine while it lasts, but maybe don’t get too attached to your perfect hair day, because there is a good chance we’ll get our first thunderstorm of the season soon.

A celebration of culture is coming to the city

Looking for something to do this weekend? The Calgary Vietnamese Women and Vietnamese Village YYC is hosting an Asian Heritage Month festival in the city, bringing together food, culture and community for an easy come-and-go-style afternoon.

There will be tons of Vietnamese food like banh mi, coffee, matcha and other treats, along with over 30 local vendors showcasing and selling their goods.

It takes place on Sunday, May 31, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Malborough Park Community Association, and it is completely free to attend. So grab your friends or family, and head over for a chill afternoon.

That’s your Calgary Group Chat for the week. If any of these things caught your eye, consider this your sign to send them over to your friends and be the one who always has the plans lined up.

See you next week!
