The Cities With The Most Expensive Tourist Taxes In The World, Canada Reviews

16 May 20252 Mins Read

While tourism is integral to economic stability for lots and lots of destinations, many have introduced tourist taxes to mitigate the consequences of their popularity, be that to finance new infrastructure or try and deter crowds.

But as a traveller, those fees have the potential to amount to quite a lot on top of your budget, so it’s good to have an idea of how much you’ll be charged in each destination. Handily, that’s why Holidu, a rental booking platform, has designed a tourist tax calculator.

All you need to do to see how much tax you’ll pay is input your destination, select the correct currency for you, put in the cost of your rental accommodation per night and how many nights you’re staying, and voilà!

Recommended: Tenerife is introducing daily visitor caps and a new tourist tax.

So, hypothetically, if we booked a trip to Barcelona for seven nights, and our accommodation cost £81 per night, our tourist tax total would be approximately £34.10.

Pretty handy, right?

Holidu also released a list of the cities with the highest tourist taxes, and claiming first place is Los Angeles, which has a steep nightly fee of £31.78. It was closely followed by New York in second place, with £31.46.

The top three is rounded out by Washington DC with 30.65. The USA actually claims eight of the top 10 spots overall, with Las Vegas, Orlando and San Francisco all claiming a place, too.

Amsterdam is the only European city in the top 10. The Dutch capital raised its tourist tax last year and now charges the steepest tax in the EU.

Read on for the full ranking.
