The City of Vancouver is hiring lifeguards and paying up to nearly $30 an hour

14 October 20252 Mins Read

Yes, you can still apply to be a lifeguard during the colder months! Vancouver’s many indoor pools remain popular year-round, and the City is currently looking for dedicated individuals interested in becoming lifeguards.

What are the perks of becoming a lifeguard?

In addition to earning good money while keeping swimmers safe ($25.21 to $29.63 per hour plus 12 percent in lieu of benefits for indoor pool lifeguards, $30.81 per hour for outdoor lifeguards), Vancouver lifeguards have a ton of flexibility when it comes to their work schedules. This makes it a great option for students or those with other jobs or commitments who are looking for something part-time or seasonal.

Becoming a lifeguard can also be a stepping stone if you’re keen on one day becoming a firefighter, paramedic, or teacher.

Finally, lifeguards enjoy a fun team environment all the while developing their communication, leadership, and crisis and risk evaluation skills.

How to become a lifeguard

Now, let’s get into the certification process. Applicants must be at least 15 years old and complete four mandatory courses (and one optional Aquafit and lifesaving instructor course)

  • Bronze Medallion (13+ years)
    Bronze Cross (13+ years)
  • Standard First Aid with CPR C/AED (14+ years)
  • Swim Instructor and National Lifeguard Certification (15+ years)

The City has not yet announced the next dates for each course, so stay tuned for those details shortly!

The process of becoming a certified lifeguard ends with a final hiring screening, which is an interview session that includes both dry and wet evaluation components. The former will focus on interview questions, teamwork, communication, and first aid-CPR. The latter includes the physical tests needed for lifeguard work.

Check back soon for the upcoming dates and pricing info for all prerequisites.
