It’s hard to imagine that a director as beloved and creative as John Carpenter would ever put a toe out of line with audiences. He proved himself a master of horror with the equally terrifying and iconic Halloween in 1978, as well as the supernatural and suspenseful The Fog in 1980. He often assembles incredibly talented casts, pairing big movie stars with relative unknowns to create dynamic chemistry that enhances his films and keeps audiences engaged from start to finish.
Carpenter’s stellar reputation in the horror and action genres helped make him an icon—which is why it may surprise fans new to his work that the initial reception to the director’s paranoia-fueled The Thing in 1982 was overwhelmingly negative. The Thing was a critical flop
The Thing follows a group of scientists based in Antarctica. The team — featuring big names like Kurt Russell as R.J. MacReady, Keith David as Childs, and Charles Hallahan as Norris — encounters an extraterrestrial life form that can perfectly copy whatever it interacts with… including them. This “thing” has no purpose other than to spread like a virus and, because of its uncanny ability to imitate, quickly stirs distrust that ripples through the base like wildfire.
Despite tackling many of the same social anxieties and topics of his previous work, Carpenter’s blend of psychological horror and sci-fi with The Thing didn’t come close to receiving the same praise and adoration. On the contrary, Roger Ebert’s review ripped it to smithereens, calling it a “great barf-bag movie” with “superficial characterizations” and “implausible behavior.” Other critics felt it was little more than a drab, gory sci-fi horror with little to add beyond some truly imaginative jump scares.
Carpenter told Time Out in 2008 that some critics felt that The Thing betrayed the sci-fi genre. It stood in stark contrast to E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, which was released shortly before. If E.T. encouraged audiences to believe in the wonders of space and the life that resided out there in the universe, The Thing was a clear warning that humanity simply wasn’t prepared to mess with the unknown, lest we turn on each other in the process. It was cynical in an era where people were looking for hope and optimism.
John Carpenter’s redemption
Yet for all the negativity the film received at its debut, decades later it seems impossible to find a horror fan who doesn’t consider The Thing one of Carpenter’s best works. It’s not hard to see why, given how often history reminds us how readily humanity can turn on one another through war and bloodshed. Even as the scientists lament that they must kill to survive, they do so as soon as the me-vs.-them mentality spreads through the team as fast as the “thing” itself does.
Still, The Thing doesn’t just offer social commentary on humanity’s fallacies — it also showcases the beauty of creation, which, in a time of rampant AI, feels like a poignant reminder of what people can achieve through skill and talent. Cinefantastique was right to call The Thing “the most incredible display of special effects makeup in at least a decade.” Rob Bottin’s creature effects are extraordinary; even on a recent rewatch, the film remains visually inventive with how the “thing” looks. Whether it’s a blend of Siberian Husky and alien monster or a grotesque, mutated upside-down head with spider-like legs, Bottin and his team’s skill with food, rubber, chemicals, etc., to create a unique alien look still remains incredible 44 years later.

Like most cult classics, The Thing eventually found its audience and place in pop culture. It not only spawned a sequel but also built a media franchise that includes comic books, board games, and even a video game. Most importantly, a sequel, The Thing 2, is in development. Whether it will ever see the light of day remains to be seen — especially as it isn’t the first time Carpenter has teased a new entry to the franchise — but for horror fans who have been eager to find out what comes next, any news is good news.
