The Division 2’s New Echoes of Central Park DLC Isn’t Setup for The Division 3

9 September 20265 Mins Read

You can’t take The Division out of the Northeast Corridor. For the past decade, Ubisoft’s loot-shooter has pingponged between two bastions of American power and culture — first in New York City, then in Washington, D.C., then back to NYC (twice). The Division 2 will once return to the Big Apple with its forthcoming Echoes of Central Park DLC, which its director described as the darkest story in the series yet, though don’t expect it to tee up the long-awaited The Division 3.

For those who’ve kept pace with The Division, that might sound like a tall order, since the series is nothing if not dark. The first game, 2016’s The Division, painted a grim picture of a pandemic bringing civilization to its knees, killing millions and ushering in an era of martial law and inscrutable violence. Its sequel, 2019’s The Division 2, sent players to the Capitol, showing how effectively a pandemic can collapse a government. Two subsequent expansions, Warlords of New York in 2020 and Battle for Brooklyn in 2025, continued the story in Lower Manhattan and Downtown Brooklyn respectively.

“When we do those DLCs, we’re always trying to see, ‘What’s the new thing that could appeal to a different audience?’” The Division 2 creative director Yannick Banchereau told Polygon during a recent interview at Gamescom 2026. “And this is why with this one, we went with the darker tone and a different take on The Division fantasy.”

As its name suggests, Echoes of Central Park will send players to Central Park. Despite a full game and two expansions detailing New York, the city’s most famous park hasn’t been an explorable location, though it has been mentioned: At the outbreak of The Division’s pandemic, Central Park was used as a burial ground. (This was years ahead of IRL Central Park’s 2020 transformation into a COVID-19 field hospital.)

Even the hardened soldiers and bandits of The Division lore tend to steer clear of the Central Park mass grave. Citizens spread urban legends about “monsters” and “what lives in the woods,” Banchereau said. Echoes of New York will shed light on those mysteries.

“We are exploring an almost horror thematic,” Banchereau said. “People who have no access to technology anymore, people who have no access to information anymore, what stories do they make up of what lives in the woods and what comes from the woods?”

“It’s kind of bending the rules of Clancy,” he added. “It’s this very oppressive, mysterious, and fear-based story.”

Beyond Central Park, Echoes of New York will also add the Upper West Side. (With apologies to patrons of The Stumble Inn, the Upper East Side remains inaccessible.) The team chose the neighborhood due to its typically sunny portrayal in “rom-coms and sitcoms,” Banchereau said. “That was very interesting for us to explore that in a Division context.”

If you’ve ever visited New York City and played either The Division or its sequel’s expansions, you’ll know that Ubisoft’s environmental artists have created arguably the most realistic digital depiction of Manhattan in history. The scaling is obviously adjusted for the limitations of development, but all of the details — the brick townhouse grandeur of Chelsea, the unending malaise of Midtown, the former sushi place that served as an exterior shot for John Wick’s Continental hotel — bely an extraordinary level of research and authenticity. They even got that little hut in Union Square.

“When we pick a city, we don’t pick it just because the geography makes sense, because the streets are pretty,” Banchereau said. “We’re interested in the story, the history. We’re interested in the people living there.”

Of course, The Division has been on a bit of a roller coaster since its pre-pandemic heights. In 2024, Ubisoft canceled the free-to-play spinoff The Division Heartland, three years after its reveal. The Division Resurgence, a different free-to-play spinoff, hit mobile devices this past spring, following multiple delays. It was ported to Windows PC in August. The next tent pole is The Division 3, which Ubisoft announced in 2023 but has been largely mum about since. If Banchereau is clear about one thing, it’s that Echoes of Central Park is not explicitly connected to this next mainline game.

“The Division 3 is its own thing and we are not working on The Division 2 with The Division 3 in mind,” Banchereau said. “We are making our own product. We wanna keep The Division 2 going for as long as we can. And, you know, when time comes and when we’re ready, we’d be happy to send our players there, but for the time being, we are working independently from that.”

The Division 2: Echoes of Central Park does not have a release date. Ubisoft will announce more details at a gameplay reveal showcase on Sept. 24 at 12 p.m. EDT.
