The Edmonton Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (July 21)

21 July 20264 Mins Read

Welcome to Edmonton’s group chat, your weekly roundup of what’s trending, what’s new, and what’s actually worth talking about. Here, we can get the hottest events and news right to your phone and group chat without any issues. If your friends are talking about it, you’re going to find everything you need to know right in this article.

It’s been storm central in the Edmonton area, but don’t worry, there’s still lots of things to do in the city. We’ve also got all the updates and details on what you need to know as an Edmontonian. From new shops to weather updates, we’re going to keep you and all your friends in the loop.

What’s trending, Edmonton?

There’s an official air quality warning due to the wildfires

According to Weather Canada, the wildfire smoke has made its way over into the Edmonton area, so it’s suggested folks stay inside for the time being.

Truly, it’s a shame, especially considering the weather coming up this week is some of the best we’ve seen all summer. There’s even going to be sunny skies with 31 degrees Celcius on Thursday; how incredible is that?

Hit the mall while you need to stay inside and check out the new stores

If you’re looking for your new favourite spot for quality workwear and everyday clothing, a new store has just opened in Edmonton that’s worth checking out. Kit + Ace, a Canadian clothing retailer known for its classic apparel and comfort-focused technical fabrics, has opened a brand-new Edmonton location at West Edmonton Mall.

If the name sounds familiar, it’s because the retailer previously had a location on Whyte Avenue that opened in 2021. That store has since closed, but the brand has now returned to Edmonton.

Or, you might want to focus on your wellness instead

Spas in Edmonton aren’t hard to come by, but a good one can absolutely make your day. That’s why we’ve rounded up some of the best spas in the city to make sure you get your summer of rest and relaxation.

Whether it’s a massage, a dip in a pool, or a few minutes in the sauna, these places have definitely got you covered. No matter what you’re looking for, these spas will help you achieve the best experience imaginable. Considering the air quality, it’d be great to have some refreshment in your life.

If you do wanna get a dose of the outdoors, consider checking out the sky

From July 17 to Aug. 24, the Perseid meteor shower will be taking over the sky. With this shower, you’ll be able to see as many as 50 meteors per hour in rural areas and Dark Sky preserves. We wrote about the best places to see it and when the meteor shower will be peaking.

This wicked experience only happens once a year, so keep your calendar free for evenings full of watching the night sky.

Maybe you want to escape the city itself

Considering the meteor shower, this might actually be the best time to head on a road trip. We’ve got you covered, as we just got into Bon Accord, a town just north of Edmonton that actually acts as a Dark Sky preserve.

This charming town, according to the Dark Sky Association, was the first in Canada and the 11th in the world to receive International Dark-Sky Association (IDA) status. It’s pretty incredible if you ask us, and absolutely perfect for watching the stars.
