1. Highest 2 Lowest (Apple TV+)
Spike Lee remakes Akira Kurosawa with a hip-hop twist. Denzel Washington is a music mogul whose son is kidnapped by a disgruntled artist (rapper ASAP Rocky, acquitting himself well). When he discovers it’s the child of his driver (Jeffrey Wright) who’s been abducted, he must decide: how much ransom is too much to clear his conscience? The thriller hits Apple TV+ after an extremely short theatrical window, which Lee does not seem particularly thrilled by himself. Read our review.

2. Friendship (HBO Max)
If you’re already in the cult of comedian Tim Robinson, you’ll almost certainly be satisfied by his first movie-star vehicle: it’s basically a 90-minute I Think You Should Leave sketch, about a suburban dad (Robinson) struggling to connect with his cool new neighbour (Paul Rudd). If you read that wondering ‘What’s I Think You Should Leave?’ then it might be a tougher sell. But if you like your humor awkward and digressive, give it a shot. Read our review.

3. Dangerous Animals (Shudder)
Slasher meets shark movie? How did it take so long to happen? Aussie actor Jai Courtney gets to go full ham as a Gold Coast serial killer using unsuspecting tourists as human chum. It’s a ludicrously fun time with a couple of gnarly moments that might require a dramamine to get through. Read our review.

4. Winter Spring Summer or Fall (Paramount+)
Jenna Ortega and Percy Hynes White, both of Netflix’s Wednesday, reunite for this teen romantic drama that came and very quickly went from theaters earlier this year. It follows a high school overachiever (Ortega) who falls in love with a free-spirited skater boy (White) just before setting off to college, making it something like a YA Say Anything, if we’re feeling generous.

5. Back to Black (Peacock)
Marisa Abela, so good in this year’s Black Bag, is given the impossible task of embodying the late singer Amy Winehouse, a truly one of a kind powerhouse whose tragically short life is obvious biopic fodder but whose talent and unique charisma is especially difficult to mimic onscreen. We can’t say the film is ‘surprisingly successful’ or anything like that, but Abela is talented enough to make it worth watching just to see her give it a go. Read our review.
