The Five Best New Movies To Stream This Week (September 22-26), Canada Reviews

22 September 20253 Mins Read

Streaming ain’t easy. Sure, if you’re a cinephile, practically every movie you could ever want to watch is at your fingertips. But therein lies the problem: knowing what’s out there, and where to find it, can become overwhelming. Here, we’re doing the hard work for you, by cutting through the clutter and getting straight to the best new movies available to watch right now and in the near future. Here are the five must-watch movies hitting streaming services this week.

1. Superman (HBO Max)

It’s not easy to make an immortal Space Jesus like Superman compelling to modern audiences, but writer-director James Gunn and actor David Corenswet manage to humanise the Last Son of Krypton more than anyone since Christopher Reeve. The result? A uniquely charming superhero blockbuster, marking a pretty good start for the relaunched DCU. Read our review.

2. Elio (Disney+)

Well, it didn’t end up the lowest-grossing Pixar movie of all-time, but it’s still one of the animation studio’s bigger flops. Hopefully it finds a broader audience on streaming, because it’s a rewarding little space adventure, about an alien-obsessed child who gets his wish of being sucked up into UFO, only to find himself mired in an intergalactic quagmire.

3. The Surfer (Hulu)

Nic Cage hangs ten in this psychedelic thriller about an anonymous American surfer (duh) on vacation in Australia trying to catch some tasty waves with his son who’s gradually driven to his breaking point by some aggressive locals. Irish director Lorcan Finnegan drew upon tense Oz classics like Wake in Fright for this psychological horror show. Read our review.

Watch The Surfer on Hulu from September 25

4. Bodyguard of Lies (Paramount+)

Documentarian Dan Krauss explores the boondoggle of the war in Afghanistan, which stretched across four presidencies, each proliferating the lies and deception of the previous administration to the American public. A fascinating and enraging bit of docu-journalism – with a score from indie-rock heroes Animal Collective to boot.

Watch Bodyguard of Lies on Paramount+ from September 23

5. House on Eden (Shudder)

Have we gotten far enough away from the post-Blair Witch era that found-footage horror can seem fresh again? In this low-budget creep-out, a group of internet ghost hunters explore a haunted house and, well, things get just a wee bit out of hand. Sounds a bit like the British TV cult classic Ghostwatch, updated for the YouTube era.
