Fans will get to say their goodbyes to Nick Nelson and Charlie Spring, as Heartstopper comes to an end on Netflix with a feature-length film. Production is now underway, and we anticipate the film will be released on Netflix sometime in 2026.
Heartstopper is an upcoming Netflix Original romantic drama film, and a sequel to the Heartstopper television series created by showrunner Alice Oseman. Wash Westermoreland will direct the movie.
Alice Oseman shared the following about the film with TUDUM:
“It’s a huge sigh of relief! We’ve been working towards and hoping for this moment since we wrapped production of Season 3 at the end of 2023. There has been a huge amount of dedication and determination behind the scenes to get to this point. I’ve seen how frustrated and worried fans have been about whether we’d get to tell the end of the story — I’ve had messages asking about it every single day since Season 3 dropped! So I’m incredibly relieved that the answer is YES.”
Ian Canning, Kit Connor, Joe Locke, Euros Lyn, Alice Oseman, Emile Sherman, and Patrick Walters are the executive producers of the film.

At the end of April, Alice Oseman had an update for fans:
“It’s already gone through several drafts, and I’m now working closely with our director Wash Westmoreland and the production team to iron out some final tweaks. As we officially head into pre-production, we’ll be organizing and discussing all aspects of the movie from costume to locations to music and more. It’s a lot of fun.”
But the latest update will have fans incredibly happy. We previously reported that Heartstopper was set to start filming in June 2025, and the social media channels of Netflix and production company See-Saw Films have confirmed that production is now underway.

Why a movie?
Joe Locke, who plays Charlie Spring, shared his thoughts on why the story will conclude with a film instead of a fourth season:
“I think the time it would’ve taken to film a series, we just wouldn’t have been able to get everyone in the same place for five years. Then by that time, there would be no need for it. So, we realized that the only way to get it made this year is if we do a film because it’s less time commitment, and well, we can still put in a lot of the same love and care into the characters, into finishing off the story.
It makes it feel more cinematic, more grand, and gives it the ending it deserves, which I am really excited to start shooting. And the script is great.”
On the other hand, the data from the performance of the series may tell us a different story.
There’s no doubt that the series is popular and has amassed a fiercely loyal fan base. However, the data confirms that seasons 2 and 3 struggled to retain the viewership of the first season, with a significant 4.5 million swing in viewership between the first two weeks of the first and third seasons.
Arguably, a feature-length film is the perfect send-off the series deserves.
