Star Wars returned to movie theaters in May after a six-year drought with Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu, a big-screen continuation of the beloved three-season Disney Plus series. And while The Mandalorian and Grogu is currently in the top-10 highest grossing movies of 2026, it seems like legions of Star Wars fans have been content to wait for a home release.
After The Mandalorian and Grogu got a digital release on July 21, Star Wars fans have another option: a 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray release scheduled for Aug. 25, with a SteelBook version and a “Beskar Collector’s Edition” coming alongside standard Blu-ray and DVD releases.

The Mandalorian and Grogu was released in movie theaters on May 22, the first time that Star Wars had graced the big screen with a new movie since 2019’s much-maligned Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. While critical response ranged from middling to mostly positive for Mando and Grogu’s jump from TV to the big screen, audiences didn’t show up for the film.
In Polygon’s review of The Mandalorian and Grogu, critic Jake Kleinman said that Jon Favreau’s film “isn’t a movie for long-time Star Wars fans; it’s a desperate attempt to cultivate a new generation before it’s too late.”
“Baby Yoda was a once-in-a-generation character whose appeal has more to do with his visual design than the canon and lore that surrounds him (a tradition that dates back to the very beginning of Star Wars),” Kleinman said. “Jon Favreau understands this better than anyone. He’s made a movie seemingly built around cute cutaways to Grogu and occasional references to something older Star Wars fans will recognize. The kids will go home happier than anyone still seething over the prequel trilogy.
“The fact that Favreau managed to do all that while also producing something that still feels like a movie at all actually feels like an incredible achievement. But the fact that The Mandalorian and Grogu fails to be ‘a Star Wars Movie’ means it probably never should have been made.”
