The most magical parks and green spaces to visit in Calgary this season

25 December 20254 Mins Read

‘Twas the night before Christmas, and all throughout Calgary, there were parks to visit.

Would you like to go for a Christmas Day stroll through one of our beloved local green spaces? You’ve come to the right place. Here are all the most magical parks and green spaces to visit in Calgary this Christmas.

Some of these spots are seasoned with the spirit of the holidays, and others are just downright scenic. Wherever you decide to celebrate Christmas, make a visit to one of these natural spaces part of your plans.

The natural beauty of this green space along the riverbend gives Carburn Park a Snow White feel, even more so with the nearby white-tailed deer, which can be found tucked away in the brambles of the park.

You can walk through these dense paths on Christmas, with snow and icicles floating overhead.

Head towards the riverbank and you’ll see the Bow River glazed over with crystalline ice.

Outdoor firepits are placed near the entrance of the park, and you can even go for a Christmas Day skate on the inner pond.

Where: 67 Riverview Dr. SE

Prince’s Island Park and the adjacent lagoon freeze over in winter, but the park is alive with critters all year long.

Squirrels and birds can be seen hopping amongst the branches of the trees along the riverbank, especially on Christmas Day.

An evening walk in Prince’s Island Park has views of the skating rink, River Cafe and downtown Calgary. Plus, with the recent redesign of Eau Claire Plaza, a lot is going on in this area of town.

The Plaza Promenade is lit up with warm string lights, connecting downtown to the south bank of the Bow River.

On a snowy day, the views along the river and of the frosty downtown core are quite picturesque!

Where: 698 Eau Claire Ave. SW

This northern Calgary park is frequently vouched for as one of the best places to skate in the city.

The firepits are alight on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, and there’s public skating on the pretty lagoon.

It’s easy to access for all ages, and the perfect place to go for a Christmas Day skate.

You can even roast a few marshmallows and have a meal around the fire before or after to warm up.

Where: 8900 48th Ave. NW

The garden built in the early 20th century by William Reader is now a National Historic Site.

Covered in a fresh blanket of snow, it’s also super charming, especially on a Christmas Eve or morning walk.

The nearby cemetery is a little ominous while covered in snow, but there are additional walking trails throughout.

In the garden, the cascading rock surrounding the main water feature freezes over, and there’s a lovely bridge made of natural wood.

You can rest under the gazebo and look out at William Reader’s family home —  it’s now been restored, but it will give your Christmas an authentic, traditional feel.

Where: 325 25th Ave. SE

No matter how you slice it, Confederation Park is especially scenic during winter.

With cross-country skiers and sledders in abundance on Christmas, it’s the perfect choice for a festive, fun time and a photo shoot.

Bundle up and wear some big boots if you plan on visiting Confederation Park on Christmas Day — there’s plenty of deep snow off the beaten path.

You’re sure to spot some local wildlife at this public park. Perhaps even a woodpecker or two will come out to play!

However you choose to spend the day, we wish you a happy holiday and new year.

Where: 905 30th Ave. NW
