The Most Unforgettable Apocalypse Action Movie of the 21st Century Is Officially Leaving Streaming

28 August 20265 Mins Read

Movies about the end of the world have programmed us to never get attached to anybody, especially when the undead are involved. Assemble a group of survivors, give each of them a recognizable personality, and then gradually kill them off until only a lucky few remain. Even a zombie comedy like Shaun of the Dead decimates the cast, leaving just Shaun and Liz as the last two standing. So when the guy fulfilling the archetype of the battle-hardened warrior deliberately draws the attention of a zombie horde during the movie’s climax, every instinct tells us to expect a heroic death.

But Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) survives the final battle of Zombieland. So does Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg). So do Wichita (Emma Stone) and Little Rock (Abigail Breslin). Somehow, all four members of this found family make it through the movie alive. The final moments even feel like something closer to a romantic comedy as Columbus and Wichita share a kiss. (Spoilers for a 17-year-old movie. Sorry.)

With Zombieland leaving Netflix after Aug. 31, now is the perfect time to revisit the zombie apocalypse movie that remains as gloriously strange as it is entertaining, even after nearly two decades. It has everything you want in a zombie movie: memorable characters, great action sequences, elaborate kills, and a constant feeling of danger amidst all the blood and gore. But thanks to the charming chemistry between its actors, Zombieland feels like a transcendent experiment that earns the right to make some big swings.

The premise is simple: An anxious college student who goes by Columbus has survived the collapse of civilization by following a list of rules. “Cardio” is essential. So is “double tap,” where you always make sure a zombie is actually dead. He eventually encounters Tallahassee, a grumpy warrior driven by his search for Twinkies. The pair later crosses paths with con-artist sisters Wichita and Little Rock.

Everybody agrees to identify themselves with their hometowns to avoid getting too attached, a cute gimmick that also serves as a great expression of the movie’s central theme. Columbus was isolated even before the world ended. Wichita and Little Rock trust only each other. Tallahassee performs a cartoonishly macho version of himself to conceal the grief he carries after losing his young son.

This kind of deeper look into each character’s inner psyche would usually feel out of place in a zombie flick, or any horror movie for that matter. Yet the acting strength of the cast does a lot of the heavy lifting. Eisenberg was fresh off his starring turn in Adventureland earlier in the year at a time in his career just before The Social Network wowed audiences. He still felt like a lovably nervous dork in every film who hadn’t taken a villainous turn just yet. Meanwhile, Stone’s star was only just rising. Zombieland came just a couple of years after her real breakout role in Superbad, and you could credit these two movies as the first major stepping stones in her career.

Tallahassee is brimming with machismo as Harrelson fires on all cylinders. He makes for a convincing badass, but Harrelson has the acting chops to infuse the character with a rich inner life. The cast’s chemistry holds everything together, allowing the movie to leap from grotesque slapstick to romance to genuine grief without seeming embarrassed by any of it.

Columbus’ survival rules feel playful and cheeky rather than some kind of forced construction. As graphics spelling out these rules burst into the physical world around Columbus, they seem to transform his anxiety into part of the movie’s visual language. Yet even these jokes made at his expense serve his emotional arc. Columbus begins the story believing survival means minimizing every possible risk, but he ultimately abandons his own rules to rescue Wichita and Little Rock. “Don’t be a hero” becomes “Be a hero,” because living cautiously is meaningless if he has nobody to live for.

Zombieland plays around with zombie conventions, but it never treats the genre itself as a joke. The most radical thing it does is allow love and joy to endure in a dying world. Tallahassee gets his heroic last stand without having to die. Columbus gets the girl without any complications (for now, anyway). Wichita and Little Rock finally trust someone other than each other, and the movie doesn’t punish anyone for any of this.

Plenty of movies that followed also tried for this kind of self-aware horror-comedy with inventive violence and sentimental character work. Even 2019’s Zombieland: Double Tap sequel reunited the same director, writers, and cast. But none of them managed to recreate the original’s peculiar alchemy. You can invent more rules and increasingly ridiculous kills, but you cannot watch these four people find one another for the first time again.

That makes Zombieland a genuine lightning-in-a-bottle movie. It looks like an irreverent exercise in breaking every rule, yet underneath all that blood and chaos is the earnest belief that survival means so much more than merely avoiding death.

Before it leaves Netflix, it’s worth taking one more trip to Zombieland — where, impossibly, everyone gets to live.
