The new season of this popular Netflix show features a local Calgary indie band

29 August 20253 Mins Read

A local Calgary indie band Thomas Thomas made an appearance on a recent episode of My Life With the Walter Boys.

The new season of the Netflix show premiered on Aug. 28, and the band took to Instagram to share the news of their surprise cameo on episode 4.

My Life With the Walter Boys is currently filming its third season in Calgary and the surrounding area, with shooting expected to wrap in December 2025.

A dream come true

The band described the “surreal announcement” in an Instagram post on Aug. 28 to accompany the premiere.

“That’s right, Thomas Thomas is cannon in the WBCU (Walter Boys Cinematic Universe) — with a new band member!” they said on Instagram. “It’s been hard to keep this one to ourselves. It was such a thrill to be involved — even if it was just a short moment.”

During the fourth episode of the new season, you can see guitarist Thomas Englund and singer-songwriter Shannon Thomas chatting in the background of a scene as the series’ main character, Jackie Howard, speaks to the fictional band’s frontman. Thomas Thomas’ “new band member” is the character Howard speaks to during the episode.

Even though the band exists only in the Walter Boys Cinematic Universe, there are still hints of Thomas Thomas’ signature stage look. Englund and Thomas appear in bright yellow, a nod to their indie pop-rock project. Their accompanying fictional bandmates also don their recognizable bee-yellow aesthetic.

Right place, right time

Thomas Thomas’ indie pop song, “Right Place Wrong Time,” is also featured in the episode. The song has recently received national coverage in a 2023 summer Starbucks ad campaign.

Even though it’s a short moment, it’s a special one for a local indie band project who have been putting in the work at the local scene level, performing at music festivals like Sled Island, BIG! Winter Classic and Breakout West.

The band also played the Calgary Stampede’s Coca-Cola Stage on July 11. In a hilarious turn of events, their appearance was picked up by a local TikTok personality, and the band took the opportunity to turn the viral moment into a branded T-shirt.

Keep an eye out for Thomas Thomas in season 2 of My Life With the Walter Boys. With season 3 currently filming in Alberta, there may even be more future surprise appearances from local indie acts.
