The next Spider-Man movie officially arrives in 10 months, and it doesn’t star Tom Holland

3 August 20265 Mins Read

Superhero fatigue may be real, Marvel movies can stumble, and even the MCU isn’t guaranteed a blockbuster simply because its logo appears before the opening credits anymore. Spider-Man, meanwhile, just shattered the record books. Brand New Day opened to $360 million domestically, surpassing Avengers: Endgame’s $357 million debut to score the biggest opening weekend in North American box office history.

More than two decades after Tobey Maguire first put on the mask, Spider-Man remains about as close to a sure thing as Hollywood has to offer. Three different Peter Parkers have headlined movies. Miles Morales has become a star in his own right. And while plenty of superhero franchises have spent the past few years trying to figure out how to keep audiences interested, Spider-Man’s biggest problem might be the opposite: figuring out how many different versions of him audiences will keep showing up to see. We’re about to find out.

Brand New Day may have only just arrived, but anyone already wondering when Spider-Man (and Tom Holland) will be back on the big screen doesn’t have to wait very long. The next Spider-Man movie officially arrives in theaters in just 10 months. It just won’t star Tom Holland.

Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse hits theaters on June 18, 2027, bringing Miles Morales (Shameik Moore) back to the big screen four years after Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse left him in possibly the worst predicament of his young superhero career. Sony describes the movie as the conclusion to the Spider-Verse saga, which means the next Spider-Man movie isn’t simply another trip through the multiverse. It’s the ending of a story that began nearly a decade ago, and Miles still has quite a bit of unfinished business.

Is Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse really the end?

Probably not in the way that matters most. Beyond the Spider-Verse is being billed as the conclusion to the Spider-Verse saga, and there’s every reason to expect it will give Miles’ trilogy a real ending. But Into the Spider-Verse also proved something much bigger than whether audiences would embrace an animated Spider-Man movie.

It proved they would embrace a Spider-Man movie without Peter Parker at its center.

That sounds less revolutionary now than it did in 2018, which might be the greatest compliment you can give this trilogy. Miles went from being a character many moviegoers had never encountered to headlining two critically acclaimed blockbusters, while Spider-Gwen (Hailee Steinfeld), Spider-Man Noir (Nicolas Cage), Spider-Man 2099 (Oscar Isaac), and approximately 8 billion other Spider-People turned the franchise’s central premise into something much larger than a single guy named Peter Parker.

Even Sony’s official description of Across the Spider-Verse boils the philosophy down to a simple idea: “Anyone can wear the mask.” Beyond the Spider-Verse now has the considerably harder job of proving that a story built around infinite possibilities can still have a satisfying ending.

That’s what makes the next 10 months unusual for Spider-Man. Brand New Day has just opened another chapter for the character audiences have been watching since Tom Holland first snatched Captain America’s shield in 2016. Beyond the Spider-Verse is preparing to close the book on another Spider-Man we’ve been following since 2018.

What happens next for Tom Holland’s Spider-Man?

Miles Morales may be approaching the end of his trilogy, but Tom Holland apparently already knows where his Spider-Man is going next.

Holland recently revealed on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that there has been a larger plan for his Spider-Man in development since No Way Home. While he acknowledged that those plans will inevitably change, Holland said he has a clear idea of where Peter Parker’s story is headed and, perhaps more intriguingly, how he will eventually “pass the baton” to whoever comes next.

Exactly when that happens is another question. Marvel and Sony haven’t announced a fifth Holland Spider-Man movie, but Brand New Day certainly doesn’t feel like the end of Peter Parker’s story. If anything, it leaves him in a place where there’s still plenty left to explore.

There’s also a decent chance we see Holland again before Spider-Man 5 ever happens. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are both looming, and Spider-Man has plenty of history with the Avengers after fighting alongside them in Infinity War and Endgame. Holland hasn’t officially been confirmed for either movie, so for now any appearance remains speculation. Still, it would hardly be surprising if Peter Parker gets pulled back into the MCU’s biggest fight before returning for another solo adventure.

The more interesting question might be what Holland meant by “passing the baton.” He didn’t say who would receive it or even whether he was talking about another Spider-Man. But with Miles Morales about to complete his own movie trilogy, it’s difficult not to notice the timing. Sony will soon have one enormously popular Spider-Man reaching the end of his story while another is possibly beginning a new chapter.

For now, however, the only Spider-Man movie officially waiting on the calendar after Brand New Day belongs to Miles Morales.

One Spider-Man has a future we know is coming but can’t quite see yet. The other already has an ending date: June 18, 2027.
