During its second weekend in theaters, The Odyssey did better than The Dark Knight
The Odyssey continues to be a box office success story, holding strong during its second weekend in theaters. In fact, it has beaten the beloved superhero movie The Dark Knight to have the best second weekend of any Christopher Nolan film.
Deadline reports that The Odyssey grossed $87 million domestically over this three-day weekend. That is not only an impressive week-over-week hold for a blockbuster, but it bested The Dark Knight‘s second weekend. In 2008, that Batman movie made $75.1 million in its second weekend, and no Christopher Nolan movie had been able to top that until now.
It was a great weekend for the box office overall, as Hadestown’s limited-time theatrical release grossed $9.69 million and Toy Story 5 passed the worldwide $1 billion mark to become the highest-grossing movie of the year (for now). Per Deadline, these were the top ten highest-grossing movies in theaters this weekend:

- Toy Story 5: $10 million
- Minions & Monsters: $9.6 million
- Hadestown: $9.6 million
- Evil Dead Burn: $2.6 million

- Young Washington: $1.99 million

- Obsession: $1.5 million
Beating The Dark Knight’s record shows how popular Nolan’s new film is and suggests The Odyssey may become one of his most iconic works. While the highly anticipated Spider-Man: Brand New Day is likely to impact its performance next week, people are clearly still seeking out The Odyssey. They are particularly looking for theaters that support premium formats like IMAX, 70mm, or both at the same time.
The Odyssey’s continued success means it’s unlikely to hit streaming anytime soon, so I’d really recommend seeing this one in theaters instead of waiting. Clearly, you won’t be alone in the theater if you do.
