The river meets the sea at this scenic Metro Vancouver park

23 August 20252 Mins Read

It might not be a top swimming destination, but Iona Beach Regional Park is a scenic spot to enjoy the last days of summer and the transition to fall. It’s home to diverse wildlife, easy trails, and scenic views of the Fraser River, open ocean, and nearby planes landing and taking off.

According to the park’s website, Iona Jetty stretches for 4 km and features a trail on top that’s open to walkers and leashed dogs, as well as a lower trail that’s open to walkers, cyclists, and dogs, on or off-leash.

Ample birdwatching opportunities exist at the north and south ponds, so don’t forget to bring your binoculars!

The beach itself stretches from the Iona Jetty to the North Jetty, which means visitors can walk as much or as little of the 3.4 km to enjoy sweeping views of the ocean, mountains, and distant islands.

In total, there are 12.8 km of walking trails to peruse at your leisure, taking in the interesting plants and driftwood during your journey.

Hours and info

Note that the park requires all dogs to be leashed, except while on the leash-optional trail along the lower roadway on the Iona Jetty.

Dogs are not permitted at all in the ponds and areas surrounding them on the park’s east side, as well as the foreshore between Iona Jetty and North Jetty, due to sensitive wildlife habitats.

Iona Beach Regional Park is open from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. until Sept. 1, 2025, and until 8 p.m. from Sept. 2 to 22, 2025.

How to get there: Drive 30 minutes from Vancouver to Iona Beach Regional Park via Granville Street and Ferguson Road
