Netflix continues to serve up a steady stream of true crime stories. Some resonate more than others, but the genre consistently performs well. The new docuseries Should I Marry a Murderer? is no exception and is attracting considerable attention. The story follows Caroline Muirhead, a young forensic pathologist from Scotland who met Alexander “Sandy” McKellar on Tinder in 2020. The two eventually became engaged, a detail that makes what unfolds even more unsettling. But where are the people involved today?

During a car ride, Sandy makes a shocking confession. He tells Muirhead that in 2017, he and his twin brother, Robert McKellar, hit a cyclist and then concealed the body. The victim turns out to be Tony Parsons, a 63-year-old man who was cycling across Scotland for charity. According to Muirhead, Sandy told her that if the truth came out, they would lose everything and spend the rest of their lives in prison.

Muirhead ultimately decides to go to the police. However, she does not immediately end the relationship. Instead, she stays in contact with Sandy while secretly cooperating with authorities. She records conversations and gathers evidence. That decision creates tension. Her approach raises difficult questions. How far can you go in order to uncover the truth?

Where are Sandy and Robert McKellar now?

Alexander “Sandy” McKellar and Robert McKellar are both currently imprisoned in Scotland. Sandy, who was driving the car during the fatal collision with Tony Parsons, reached a deal with prosecutors in 2023. He pleaded guilty to culpable homicide and was sentenced to 12 years in prison, thereby avoiding a harsher conviction.

During the trial, his lawyer issued a statement on his behalf: “The only explanation he can offer is simply fear and panic. In his own words, he says he was too cowardly to tell the truth.” Sandy also acknowledged that Caroline Muirhead made the right decision in going to the police, although that realization came too late.

Robert McKellar received a lighter sentence. He was not convicted of murder but of attempting to pervert the course of justice. He admitted to helping dispose of the body and was sentenced to five years and three months in prison. Both brothers are still serving their sentences.

What is Caroline Muirhead doing today?

Caroline Muirhead is undoubtedly the central figure in the story. Her decision to go to the police while simultaneously gathering evidence against her own fiancé made her crucial to the case, but it came at a cost. In the series, she speaks candidly about how she mentally unraveled under the pressure. She describes struggling to cope with fear and stress and eventually turning to unhealthy coping mechanisms, including alcohol and drugs. Her trust in the system was also shaken. Reflecting on her experience with the authorities, she says: “I trusted the system would stand by me and keep me safe when I was at my most vulnerable but that wasn’t my experience.”

She adds that she hopes her story will lead to change: “I hope by speaking out and sharing what happened to me, we can start an honest conversation about greater protection for victims and witnesses and why a far deeper understanding of mental health within the police and court system is so desperately needed.”

Today, Muirhead has largely rebuilt her life. She has returned to work in the medical field and is trying to move forward, while continuing to speak out about the shortcomings of the justice system.

What does this mean for Tony Parsons’ family?

For the family of Tony Parsons, the truth came only after years of uncertainty. Parsons disappeared in 2017 during a charity cycling trip, and for a long time it seemed as though he had simply vanished without a trace. Police later emphasized how devastating that period was for his loved ones: “The brutal and uncaring actions of these men left the family of Mr Parsons distraught, not knowing what had happened to him for many years. It appeared that he had just disappeared into thin air.” His body was not discovered until 2021. That finally brought answers, but not closure. The possibility that he may have still been alive after the collision makes the case all the more harrowing.

The Aftermath

Should I Marry a Murderer? makes it clear that justice is not a simple endpoint. The convictions of the McKellar brothers may close the case legally, but emotionally, the impact lingers. Sandy and Robert remain behind bars, facing the consequences of their actions. Caroline Muirhead continues to live with the weight of her decision and its psychological toll. The family of Tony Parsons must carry on with a loss that can never truly be resolved.
