Beach days, epic sunsets, good food, and outdoor adventures galore — this Ontario beach town really is the whole package.
Grand Bend, located on the eastern shore of Lake Huron, is one of the region’s most popular beach destinations, and for good reason. Known for its lively atmosphere, scenic hiking and bike trails, sun-soaked vineyards, and beachside restaurants and bars, it’s got something for everyone and plenty of reasons to stick around.
The town is located one hour north of London, which is also where the nearest airport is, or about three hours west of Toronto — the perfect distance for a summer road trip!
What to do
With its soft white sand and calm turquoise waters, Grand Bend’s Main Beach is definitely the main attraction here. Whether you’re staking out a spot to sunbathe, renting a paddleboard, or taking a refreshing dip, there are plenty of ways to enjoy it. One of the absolute highlights is its Insta-worthy sunsets — trust us, no trip is complete without witnessing one.
Fun fact: Grand Bend’s Main Beach is also one of only 22 beaches in Canada with Blue Flag status, highlighting its high standards of water quality and safety.
After you’ve had some fun in the sun, head to Pinery Provincial Park. Here, you’ll find a variety of walking and biking trails that take you through scenic landscapes, plus 10 km of beachfront to stroll along and take in unique sand dune formations.
And if you’re seeking a little serenity, the surrounding countryside offers an ideal escape from the busy beach scene. Take a drive through picturesque farmlands and quiet country roads, or sample local wines at a nearby vineyard like Shale Ridge Estate Winery or Dark Horse Estate Winery.
Where to eat
From fine dining to pub grub, Grand Bend has a big variety of restaurants to satisfy every appetite.
Start with The Growling Gator, a beachside staple located right on the main strip. This beloved spot offers front-row seats to the area’s stunning sunsets — best enjoyed from their lively patio with a tropical cocktail in hand! The vibe here is always buzzing with a mix of locals and visitors, and their legendary burgers are a must-try.
Looking for something a little more low-key? Check out The Lake Hound, a family-run restaurant with a breakfast and lunch menu that showcases locally sourced ingredients. Here you’ll find a friendly, welcoming atmosphere, local draft beer on tap, and delicious coffee.
Where to stay
No matter where you’re visiting from, Grand Bend is totally worth turning into a weekend getaway.
Nothing says “summer escape” like a cute cottage by the lake, right!? And thankfully, Grand Bend is full of them, with many being just a short walk from the beach and main strip.
Deer Park Lodge, located right on the lakefront, is a great pick for families, groups, or couples looking for spacious accommodations with sunset views. If you’re after something more tucked away, check out Haus Roko — a cozy loghouse with three floors, nestled in nature but still just a short drive from the action.
Want to stay right in the heart of it all? Just steps from the beach, you’ll find Kiwi Motel + Bar. This boutique motel offers stylish, comfortable rooms as well as a front patio, backyard bar, and pool that’s open to both guests and the public — the perfect place to mingle!
So, whether you’re after lazy beach days, adventures in nature, or sunset dinners with a view, Grand Bend serves up the all of the best things about summer.
Happy exploring!
