For decades, family travel was defined by an exhausting, unbending routine: booking around school breaks, paying peak-summer airfare surcharges, and cramming enough gear for four into a minivan.

Then, almost overnight, the house gets quiet.

Once the last kid moves out, parents enter one of life’s most liberating chapters. But if you’re still clocking into a 9-to-5, you aren’t packing up for a three-month trek across Europe just yet.

According to fresh data from YouGov Profiles tracking Americans 46 and older who are employed with no kids at home, working empty nesters are completely abandoning the idea of the single “Big Annual Family Trip.”

Instead, their number-one travel priority has become something much simpler: the quick, drive-to beach weekend.

Nearly 60% of working empty nesters named beach escapes their absolute favorite way to unwind, far outpacing bustling city trips or high-stress itineraries. And rather than saving up all their paid time off for one blowout week, two-thirds of this group took multiple mini-breaks over the past year—with nearly a fifth packing their bags for four or more short getaways.

Lakes, Backroads, and Lingering Dinners

While coastal spots lead the pack, they aren’t the only retreat on the radar. Scenic countryside, lakes, and mountain escapes tied with traditional sightseeing, each winning over 50% of travelers looking for a quick change of pace. Urban energy still has its place, with 39% seeking out historic or cultural hubs and 35% opting for quick city breaks.

Once they arrive, the goal isn’t a packed itinerary of scheduled tours. Instead, relaxation and sightseeing tied as the top priorities (66% each), followed almost immediately by long, uninterrupted dinners out (65%). Outdoor adventures (43%) and casual shopping (41%) beat out rigid museum schedules, pointing to a demographic that simply wants the space to breathe and explore at its own speed.

Ditching the Airport for the Open Road

The way this crowd gets to their destination is just as telling. While luxury travel ads love to highlight sleek airport lounges and sprawling Airbnb villas, two-thirds (67%) of working empty nesters skipped the terminal entirely on their leisure trips, choosing to hop into their own cars. Only 37% boarded a flight.

When it comes to where they sleep, classic hospitality wins handily over vacation home rentals: 60% checked into a traditional hotel or motel, compared to just 21% who booked a short-term rental like an Airbnb or Vrbo.

Their checklist when booking a room is refreshingly practical:

• Cleanliness tops the list: An overwhelming 81% rank spotless housekeeping as their absolute non-negotiable.
• Value and access: Price followed close behind at 76%, alongside a convenient location near town or attractions (64%).
• Brand names don’t matter: Only 24% said sticking to a specific hotel loyalty chain influenced their final choice.

Who’s Along for the Ride (and the One Big Gamble They Take)

Unsurprisingly, partners and spouses make up the bulk of travel companions, with 59% taking trips together as a couple. But empty nesters aren’t traveling exclusively as twosomes.

Nearly a quarter (24%) brought their grown children along for the ride, proving that while family dynamics shift once everyone lives under different roofs, parents still love catching up over an unhurried weekend away. Another 19% planned getaways with friends or extended family, while 16% embraced the total independence of traveling solo.

The study did uncover one surprising risk this seasoned demographic is willing to take: crossing international borders completely unprotected.

Of those who traveled abroad in the past 12 months, over half (53%) skipped travel insurance entirely. Only 26% opted for trip cancellation policies, and a mere 14% purchased supplemental travel medical coverage—a bold gamble for an otherwise practical group of travelers.

After years of choreographing carpools and compromising on family-friendly buffets, today’s empty nesters aren’t waiting around for retirement to reclaim their personal time. As it turns out, real vacation freedom doesn’t need to look like a transatlantic flight—sometimes it’s just a full tank of gas, a clean room, and a straight shot to the ocean.
