The United States just climbed up a list of the world’s best countries, marking its best performance on an annual ranking.
The U.S. New & World Report just released its latest analysis of countries globally, and let’s look at this year’s results.
Top Three in 2024’s List
According to the U.S. News & World Report’s 2024 Best Countries, Switzerland tops the list for the third year in a row, with Japan following in second place.
The United States ranked as third, which is an improvement from 2023’s fifth position.
What is the 2024 Best Countries List?
This is the ninth year that the U.S. News has released the Best Countries ranking, which evaluates 89 nations across 73 different attributes.
“Attributes are grouped into 10 subrankings, ranging from entrepreneurship and quality of life to adventure and heritage. The subranking of movers – which includes factors relating to a country’s future growth – is the most heavily weighted subranking this year,” it says.
And according to U.S. News Executive Chairman & CEO Eric Gertler, “the 2024 Best Countries rankings provide a comprehensive snapshot of how nations are perceived on the world stage. The report sheds light on a country’s potential for economic, political and cultural success and can serve as a strategic decision-making tool for citizens, business leaders and governments to better evaluate their countries.”
The methodology is based on a “proprietary survey of nearly 17,000 global citizens from 36 countries, including business leaders, college-educated individuals who are middle-class or higher, and general citizens who are nationally representative of their country.”
The survey was conducted from March 22 through May 23, 2024.
Overview on the United States’ Rank
This year’s report shows the U.S. scoring high when it comes to being agile, as well is its power.
“The United States of America is a North American nation that is the world’s most dominant economic and military power. Likewise, its cultural imprint spans the world, led in large part by its popular culture expressed in music, movies and television,” reads the breakdown.
While it ranks lower for Quality of Life as well as “Open for Business,” the US managed to climb to the third spot this year.
“The Best Countries report speaks to the value of having a strong global image as nations compete for foreign trade, tourists and socioeconomic influence,” said David Reibstein, professor of marketing at the Wharton School.
“The Best Countries ranking is more than a beauty contest. Global leaders need to realize that how their countries are viewed affects their economies through tourism, foreign direct investment and foreign trade, all critical components of their GDP.”
