The Vancouver Group Chat: What your friends are talking about this week (March 31)

31 March 20264 Mins Read

Welcome back to the Vancouver Group Chat, a place where all the city’s hottest updates and happenings live until they make it to your group chats. This week, we’re diving into some random trending topics, an exciting food festival announcement, and where to find the most magical cherry blossom streets to wander.

Let’s get into it!

What’s new, Vancouver?

Fearless geese and a floating gas station

This random goose made itself at home atop a cop car, which is making its rounds on Reddit. It’s true that nesting season is coming up, but surely there are better places to be!

Ever wondered what it looks like from the ominous floating gas station in Coal Harbour? A recent TikTok went viral for giving viewers an inside look, and people are vying for a summer job there.

“Playing video games and working on the water while watching TV and eating snacks sounds like a dream job,” reads one comment. “Are you guys hiring?”

Eat your heart out this summer

Vancouver’s sizzlin’ AYCE summer festival, Brewery and the Beast, is officially back on Aug. 30, 2026, with over 60 acclaimed restaurants firing up their grills. It’s a chance to roam Concord Pacific Place and really test the physical boundaries of your stomach. How full is too full?

Tickets are now on sale for just over $200 a pop, including taxes and fees.

On Sept. 27, 2026, the decadent day of outdoor dining heads to Vancouver Island, with tickets going on sale on May 6, 2026.

Wine tour season begins

You don’t have to take a road trip to the Okanagan to taste some of the best wines in the province. The Fraser Valley Wine Passport is back this year with tastings at 14 different local wineries between April 1 and May 31, 2026, except for Mother’s Day.

Each $30 passport includes taxes, with $15 going directly to the participating wineries and $15 donated to the Fraser Valley Health Care Foundation in support of local health care.

Openings to look out for

New Spanish-Italian eatery Violeté is opening on Commercial Drive next week, on April 8, 2026.

Little Spoon Ice Cream finally has an opening date for its new West Broadway location. Mark your calendars for April 10, 2026!

C Market Coffee’s new flagship cafe recently opened its doors, and now that a couple of weeks have passed, you’re sure to find a spot.

Where to find rows and rows of cherry blossoms

Vancouver’s Akebono and Somei-Yoshino cherry blossoms are in full bloom, completely blanketing Vancouver’s quiet neighbourhood streets with pink. Now is the time to do your research and scout out the best spots — and we don’t just mean for pictures. We mean a slow stroll, a warm mug in hand, and committing each beautiful tree to memory.

Here are just a couple of beautiful spots we’ve stumbled upon:

  • Willow Street and West 33rd Avenue
  • Douglas Park, Willow Street and West 20th Avenue
  • Queen Elizabeth Park, south of the Rose Garden
  • West 42nd Avenue and Collingwood Street to Blenheim Street
  • West 64th Avenue and Ash Street to Heather Street
  • Austrey Avenue from McHardy Street to Joyce Street

It doesn’t hurt that in just a few days, the temperature will literally double. Vancouver’s set to see daytime temps of 15 to 19 degrees between Friday, April 3 and Monday, April 6, 2026, and Environment and Climate Change Canada forecasts sunny skies all weekend long.

Your sign to do something random

Lean into the wacky, the weird, and the whimsical this week. Stop and smell the magnolias, tour a rooftop in Coal Harbour just because you can, or write a think piece on a typewriter. Spring is the season to try new things and put yourself out there; that way, you’re all warmed up for summer.

  • Discover a lush rooftop ecosystem on this free green roof tour on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
  • Attend a collage workshop with Sad Magazine from 7 to 9 p.m. at Slice of Life on Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
  • Write someone a letter at this free monthly letter-writing club on Main Street on Thursday, April 2, 2026.
  • Stop and smell the magnolias at the UBC Botanical Garden on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
  • Check out an April Fools Zine Festival at Red Gate Art Society on Saturday, April 4, 2026.
  • Learn about wild, native, and medicinal plants at Figaro’s Garden on Saturday, April 4, 2026.

That’s a wrap for now, Vancouver! We’ll be back next week with more updates to share with your Vancouver Group Chat.
