On a 280-acre plot in Doswell, Virginia, a new era of East Coast travel began more than five decades ago. Arriving as a “sister park” to Ohio’s Kings Island, Kings Dominion was designed to be a massive undertaking that would change the Mid-Atlantic landscape forever.
One of its earliest claims to fame was the Rebel Yell (now known as Racer 75). This wooden titan was more than just a ride; it was a pop-culture icon. It was so famous in the 1970s that it served as a primary filming location for the 1977 suspense movie Rollercoaster, cementing the park’s status as a national destination.

As the official park history records, the vision was a success from day one: “It didn’t take long for King Dominion to be recognized as the perfect family destination location in the Mid-Atlantic region.” When the gates officially opened on May 3, 1975, the park offered fifteen original attractions, including a 1/3 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower and the twin-track racing coaster that started it all.
In 2018, as part of a park-wide “revitalization” effort, the ride was rebranded as Racer 75. While the name change coincided with a broader national conversation regarding Confederate-themed iconography in the South, the park leaned into the coaster’s heritage for its new identity.
The moniker is a clever triple tribute: it honors the ride’s 1975 debut, reflects its classic “racer-style” twin-track design, and gives a stylized nod to ACE (American Coaster Enthusiasts). The organization was actually founded in 1978 following a legendary coaster marathon on this very attraction (hence the rACEr styling). To keep the legend alive for another 50 years, the park has committed to ongoing track replacements, ensuring the “new” Racer 75 offers a much smoother experience than its predecessor.
Today, the park remains a mecca for thrill-seekers, housing Pantherian (formerly known as Intimidator 305). As one of the world’s most intense ‘giga-coasters,’ it reaches speeds of 90 mph and stands as a testament to the park’s evolution from traditional charm to high-octane modern engineering.
But for many travelers, the park’s soul is still found in its original 1975 roots. On Reddit, fans often point to the unique setting of the grounds; as one commenter put it, “KD is heavily surrounded by Virginia forest… the greenery adds a ton of character, and there’s enough isolation from I-95 that you can feel like you’re somewhere special.” Others agree that the park has “maintained a lot of its charm” over the decades, noting that the “vibes at KD are fantastic,” whether you’re racing through the trees or simply watching the log flume go by from a rocking chair.
