There is a mountaintop boardwalk in Alberta that offers a panoramic view of the Rockies

27 May 20252 Mins Read

From every angle, in every small town, campground, and ski hill, the Rocky Mountains are beautiful to look at. In the summertime, however, the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk in Alberta is extra special.

The sky-high boardwalk

Located on Banff’s Sulphur Mountain, travellers in need of fresh air can enjoy a walk on the wild side, high above everyone’s favourite mountain town.

Around 7,490 feet up from the trees and wildlife, this Alberta boardwalk is tranquil, but also historic!

In addition to incredible views, you’ll also be able to visit an old weather station once used by Norman Sanson.

Sanson was a meteorologist known for walking to the top of the mountain over 1,000 times throughout his career, and now adventure seekers can do the same.

From beginning to end, Interpretive signs featuring old photos and funky facts will lead the way, but it’s up to you to set the speed.

Walk fast or slow, the trail is described as “relatively easy and suitable for visitors of all ages and fitness levels.” It’s also open year-round!

How to get there

If you’re interested in checking it out, you can either choose to hike 5.5 km upwards or take a gondola ride to the summit, but don’t look down!

There really is no place quite like it, especially when there’s sun in the sky and temperatures are on the rise.

Of all the boardwalks in Alberta, this is one of the best; just remember to take it step by step.

You won’t want to miss a beat.
