There’s a boardwalk trail in Ontario that ends with a lookout tower over a beaver pond

8 May 20253 Mins Read

Time to explore our beautiful province, and what better way than through one of its many parks? Mashkinonje Provincial Park is next on our radar, and it’s home to major wetlands that can be enjoyed through its several hiking trails.

If you find yourself in the North Bay area, this park is the perfect day trip. But if you’re travelling from Toronto, you’re looking at a four-hour drive.

Next stop: Mashkinonje Provincial Park

Nonetheless, it’s a journey worth making.

The park is home to what Ontario Parks calls “a diverse system of wetlands.” These include marshes, bogs, swamps, fens and ponds. Per Ontario Parks, two of them are considered provincially significant areas – the Loudon Basin Peatlands and the Muskrat Creek complexes.

Its current features are actually the result of a post-glacial lake that covered the area. This, combined with some parallel low elevation folded bedrock uplands, also contributed to what we see today.

Exploring the park

For a better look at what the park offers, embark on a hiking journey. There are about 10 hiking trails to explore that total 30 kilometres.

“A combined group of community and educational partners have developed a system of hiking trails in the park to make the park features available to the public,” shares Ontario Parks.

If you’re looking for an easy trail, check out the Loudon Peatland Trail. It has a boardwalk and a lookout tower at the end of it that overlooks a beaver pond.

But if you want a bit of a challenge, check out the Coastal Trail. It follows bedrock ridges along the coast of Lake Nipissing. You’ll get treated to beautiful views of the West Arm.

Friends of Mashkinonje Provincial Park highlights all the trails available here. It’s a good idea to get familiar with each trail before you decide to conquer them all.

Whether you’re in it for a scenic stroll or a rugged adventure, Mashkinonje offers something for every kind of explorer.

With its rich ecological diversity and peaceful trails, it’s a reminder of just how stunning Ontario’s natural landscapes can be.

So pack your gear, plan your route, and get ready to discover one of the province’s lovely outdoor gems.
