Jasper National Park in Alberta is an enchanting destination west of Edmonton with waterfalls, incredible hikes, deep canyons and cozy shops, but there’s no place quite like Medicine Lake.
A big blue headscratcher located less than an hour from the townsite, this scenic lake is unlike most because it actually disappears as the seasons change.
Just like magic
Sitting atop an underground cave system, Medicine Lake will look completely different depending on the time of year you visit the park.
During the summer months, water from the Maligne Valley pools into the area, making it a great place to swim, paddle, and fish.
Surrounded by the Rocky Mountains and towering trees, visitors can escape the heat and take in the fresh air. However, as temperatures drop and snowmelt slackens, the lake will begin to drain.
By the time winter rolls around, the lake “isn’t much more than a mudflat” until the province comes back to life in the spring.
“Visitors to Medicine Lake in Jasper National Park may think they’re looking at a typical mountain lake, but there is a lot going on under the surface,” writes Travel Alberta.
“The water flows through the underground caves and emerges 16 km (10 mi) downstream.”

Want to visit?
If you’re interested in checking it out, it really is an extra-special place when the sun is shining.
At 7 km long, there is plenty of space to bob, float, or paddle, plus, knowing that it’s essentially a giant bathtub makes it more exciting.
In 2025, the day use area and nearby campground will be open between May 2 and October 4, so plan ahead and don’t forget to pack snacks, towels, a change of clothes, and a camera!
Medicine Lake is a beautiful spot no matter the time of year, but it’s an all-ages playground when the grass is green.
As always, check for any road closures before starting the car.
You’re in for quite an experience. After all, who knew that Mother Nature was a seasoned magician?
