Next stop: Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park
Get ready to embark on this two and a half hours journey from Toronto. Though it’s a lengthy trip, it’s worth every second. According to Ontario Parks, it officially opens for the season next week, on May 9, 2025.
That gives us more than enough time to plan and get excited for this outdoor adventure.
Exploring the Lake on the Mountain
Lake on the Mountain Provincial Park is a day-use park. Here, visitors can enjoy a lovely picnic, go on a hiking trek through Prince Edward County, and discover the scenic yet mysterious lake, which, of course, is the showstopper.
According to Ontario Parks, the lake is a “natural curiosity with a constant flow of clean, fresh water, with no apparent source.”
But Destination Ontario has an idea. “The lake is believed to be replenished by groundwater flowing from nearby wetlands through fissures in the bedrock below the surface,” they add.
Wherever this water is coming from, its glittering sapphire blue waters and mountaintop views overlooking Lake Ontario are incredible.
Unknown origins
A popular theory about the formation of this lake is that it is a collapsed doline, which is a limestone sinkhole formed when its foundation dissolves.
Indigenous Mohawks used to believe that the lake was home to many spirits, and was even given the name “Onokenoga,” which means “Lake of the Gods.”
Whatever its origins may be, one thing is for certain – it’s a wonderful natural escape worth visiting.
Upcoming summer adventures are calling, and this natural wonder is worth adding to your list.
