These frozen falls near Jasper are even more exquisite in winter

24 December 20253 Mins Read

There are few things more beautiful in this world than a frozen waterfall — and this partially iced over one near Jasper, Alta. is an exceptional treat for the eyes.

Athabasca Falls is just as beautiful, if not more so, during the winter months. There’s truly never a bad time to be at this sapphire blue, natural waterfall. At 23-metres high, it’s not the tallest Rocky Mountain plunge, but it is exquisite none the less.

Flowing from the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield, the Athabasca River is the largest river system in Jasper. It’s also one of the most powerful mountain waterfalls to be found in Canada’s national parks, with plunging waters that carve into the limestone underneath.

It’s a pretty straight-shot route to get there when the roads are clear in winter, though still about a four and a half hour drive from Calgary. You can make the trip to see the falls yourself, and it’s worth it in every season.

What to expect

Athabasca Falls are exceptionally beautiful, and only half a day’s drive from Calgary. This powerful natural formation is a subsidiary of the Athabasca River, which flows from the glaciers of the Columbia Icefield.

You can visit the falls in winter, and they partially freeze over with an icy sheen over the vibrant blue waters. The sheer volume and force of the falls are truly amazing, pushing through nature’s natural freezing process.

These falls are easily reached from a nearby parking lot, with a waterfall and gorge that can be viewed from several fenced viewpoints. Keep note that mist from the falls covers surrounding rocks with a thin, slippery film of water. For your own safety, do not cross the railings.

Make a sighting of these picturesque falls a part of your plans this winter. They make the perfect backdrop to holiday pictures, or just a stunning natural space for you to escape the bustle of the season.

Note: When planning your trips, please be mindful of the dangers of waterfalls and the hikes to get to them. Always let someone know if you’re planning a day hike or overnight stay outdoors. Familiarize yourself with this safety list prior to departure.

Where: Jasper, Alta.
How to get there: Drive 4 hours and 30 minute northwest of Calgary
