Golfers and film lovers have Happy Gilmore in common, which remains one of the most iconic movies to be filmed in and around Vancouver. And while its star-studded sequel Happy Gilmore 2 filmed outside of B.C., that doesn’t mean we can’t stroll down memory lane at the golf courses featured in the OG movie.
Since Happy Gilmore 2 just released its highly anticipated trailer, we’re ready to relive the magic at the four local golf courses that started it all. So grab your clubs and get ready to putt, just in time for warmer spring weather!
Vancouver golf courses in Happy Gilmore
One of the first courses featured in the movie is the Stanley Park Pitch and Putt, which is also the most convenient course on this list to access if you live in the city.
When Happy steps onto the tee box for the Michelob Invitational, he’s actually at the one and only Stanley Park. The pitch and putt is first-come, first-served, offering golfers sculpted fairways, mature trees, and lush greens alongside views of English Bay. According to the City, there are 18 holes in total ranging from 40 to 100 yards, bordered by a beautiful rhododendron garden.
Next up is the Riverway Golf Course in Burnaby, which also has 18 holes and operates on a first-come, first-served basis for tee times. In the movie, this course was used for parts of the Waterbury Open.
We then come to the course where the final battle between Happy and Shooter McGavin takes place during the AT&T Invitational. Located in Pitt Meadows, the Swaneset Bay Resort and Country Club is home to the only two golf courses in the country designed by Lee Trevino — one of the most celebrated golfers in history.
In fact, Trevino even made a cameo appearance in the movie — though he came to later regret it on account of the amount of swearing in the film. However, that apparently hasn’t stopped him from reappearing in the sequel!
The last local golf course featured in the movie is the Furry Creek Golf and Country Club (AKA B.C.’s most scenic golf course), located along the Sea to Sky Highway. Boasting unparalleled views, the course is the site of one of the most iconic scenes in Happy Gilmore, when Happy and Bob Barker get into a fistfight.
