This 1 km mountain coaster near Montreal twists through a majestic red and gold forest

24 September 20253 Mins Read

If you’re craving a fall adventure that’s a little more thrilling than your average hike, you don’t need to look far.

Tucked away just a short road trip from Montreal, you can visit a four-season outdoor adventure destination and take a mountain coaster ride through golden forests.

Located in Chelsea in the Collines-de-l’Outaouais, Camp Fortune is a year-round destination for adrenaline activities.

Known for its winter skiing season and outdoor activities, Camp Fortune transforms into an autumn playground once the leaves start to change, and offers plenty of experiences perfect for taking in the fall colours.

During the fall season, you can speed down the hill through a forest, tunnels, and ski runs by riding the mountain pipe coaster.

The track winds for 1 kilometre through the Gatineau Hills, offering up a rush of adrenaline and a front-row seat to nature’s annual spectacle.

The experience begins with a scenic chairlift ride up the valley chairlift, which provides stunning views of the rolling Gatineau Hills draped in shades of red and gold.

Visitors then board the mountain coaster and cruise down the track through the forest, onto the Clifford and Marshall ski runs and through scenic tunnels.

While the surrounding scenery may be peaceful, the ride will be anything but. The gravity-fed mountain pipe coaster can reach speeds up to 40 kilometres an hour as it twists, turns and zips through the hills.

But don’t worry — you control the pace. Each cart is equipped with a handbrake, meaning you can coast to soak up the fall colours, or let loose for a heart-pumping ride down the mountain.

The rail of the coaster is just inches from the ground, so it really feels like you’re cruising along the forest floor.

Other adrenaline activities at Camp Fortune include the Peak to Peak Ziplines, where you can fly down and across the valley with beautiful views of Gatineau Park, as well as mountain biking through the forest.

Camp Fortune is also home to an aerial park with suspended walkways, monkey bridges, and more, where you can climb ladders, cross zigzag bridges, balance over tight ropes, and crawl through barrels in the air.

The mountain coaster is open on weekends, as well as Thanksgiving Monday, until October 19. Tickets start at $20 for one ride, or $30 for two rides. Visitors can also purchase a ride-all-day pass and get unlimited rides on the mountain coaster. If you get hungry during your visit, the on-site Pub 1920 is open on weekends for eat-in or grab-and-go snacks, beverages and lunches.

For more fall adventures, Camp Fortune is located just minutes away from Gatineau Park, where you’ll find many hiking trails and attractions like turquoise lakes, caves and mountains.
