This $70 train from Montreal takes you to a magical lakefront city with European charm

27 March 20262 Mins Read

All aboard! You don’t need a passport or even a car to enjoy an incredible getaway. This beautiful lakefront city is a magical spot for an escape, and it’s just under a 3-hour train ride from Montreal.

Perched on the shores of Lake Ontario, the old-world destination offers a range of attractions and a European ambiance.

You can enjoy delicious restaurants, cozy cafes, museums, galleries, and more without stressing about traffic.

Kingston is a scenic destination known as the “Limestone City” for its historic stone architecture and timeless charm.

European settlers first arrived in the area in the 1600s, and by 1841, Kingston had become Canada’s first capital, according to the City of Kingston.

Kingston has something to enjoy for every season, making it the perfect spot for a staycation.

You can reach it from Montreal in about 2 hours and 40 minutes by VIA Rail, making it an easy getaway without a car. The train station is a short distance from downtown, so plan to take a ride-share or taxi, or hop on local transit to reach the heart of the city.

You can hop on a trolley tour, explore the historic penitentiary, take in a scenic cruise, wander through galleries and museums, or even join a spooky haunted walk for some extra thrills.

Another highlight of Kingston is its food scene. You can enjoy drinks in historic pubs, indulge in fresh farm-to-table dishes, or dig into a delicious brunch with lakefront views. When the weather warms up, a gelato in hand is perfect for a scenic stroll along the waterfront.

During the winter months, you can glide around the enchanting ice rink, catch a show at the local theatre, warm up in European-style cafes, and enjoy attractions like escape rooms.

Summer brings tons of outdoor activities, from markets and movies under the stars to patios and scenic strolls.

Plus, it has many cozy inns, Airbnbs, and boutique hotels where you can book a stay.

If you’re planning an escape without a lengthy road trip, Kingston is a beautiful destination to enjoy, no car needed.

Before you get going, check out our Responsible Travel Guide so you can be informed, be safe, be smart, and most of all, be respectful on your trip.
