This Alberta park has one of the only boreal bird observatories in the world

5 August 20263 Mins Read

Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park is perfect for bird-watchers, campers, and even those looking to have a quick beach-day getaway trip. No matter what the occasion, you’re in for a good experience.

This provincial park is located north of Edmonton, and it’s absolutely packed with endless things to do. It’s not too far from the city, making it a quick day-trip destination spot for those looking to escape. Whether you’re sun-tanning, hiking, or camping, there’s something for you here.

However, for those bird-watchers in Alberta, this is definitely the place to visit.

Why is Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park good for bird-watchers?

The Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation (BCBC) is a year-round facility focused on sharing and building information, education and research about, you guessed it, birds. The centre is run in partnership by Alberta Parks and the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory Society, which also runs the Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory, one of a handful of boreal bird observatories in the world.

Here, you’ll be able to stop in to say hello and get expert advice on birding hotspots or local recommendations. Not only that, but you can also explore its fun and interactive exhibit gallery to learn about birds and the boreal forest. There’s even a gift shop featuring souvenirs, field guides, birding resources, and the work of local artisans!

If you’re a beginner bird-watcher and you haven’t brought your own gear, no worries. You can borrow some binoculars before you take a short walk on the Songbird Trail.

Looking to be guided instead? We’ve got you covered. The Lesser Slave Lake Bird Observatory Society actually hosts tours at their observatory throughout the spring and fall. These tours last approximately one hour, including information about migration and the monitoring station, hands-on activities for children, as well as the opportunity to see a migrating bird up close in hand. You can check out booking information on the organization’s website online.

What else is there to do in Lesser Slave Lake Provincial Park?

There’s more to this park than just birds.

This park has two campgrounds: Marten River and Devonshire South, as well as Group Use Areas. Devonshire and Marten River Campgrounds offer beautiful natural sand beaches, great for swimming or soaking up the sun. Surrounding the area, there’s also a variety of habitats, ranging from foothills to mixed wood forest to wetlands to shorelines.

The lake itself actually provides great fishing, paddling, and windsurfing prospects. In addition to those activities, you can also launch a motorboat at the municipal boat launch for boating and waterskiing.

Alongside these amenities, there are over 35 kilometres of trails to discover, just awaiting you. This summer is the perfect time to take that trip and explore to your heart’s content.
