This Alberta town’s history stretches back all the way to the 1800s

15 July 20263 Mins Read

Innisfail is a small town in Alberta, which you can find just between Edmonton and Calgary. Here, there’s a river float, history stretching back to the 1800s, and so much more to uncover.

If you find yourself between the two big Alberta cities, Innisfail should definitely be a stop to make. Not only is it in a prime central corridor of the province, but there’s plenty to explore. Whether it’s with family, friends, or a special loved one, you’re sure to find excitement in this small town.

As Innisfail continues to evolve, it remains true to its roots: a resilient, friendly community with its eye firmly on the future.

The history of Innisfail

According to the Innisfail website, the story of Innisfail stretches back to the late 1800s. Then, settlers were drawn to the fertile land along the Red Deer River. Originally known as “Poplar Grove,” the community was renamed Innisfail, a Gaelic word meaning “Isle of Destiny.” With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1891, Innisfail quickly became a hub for agriculture and trade, laying the groundwork for the thriving town it is today.

In the past, Innisfail’s economy was built on farming, ranching, and small industry. Not to mention, the railway brought prosperity, allowing local producers to move their goods across the province and beyond.

Now, the town’s heritage remains visible in landmarks like Innisfail’s Historical Village, where visitors can step back in time and experience early prairie life.

Things to do in Innisfail

Now, the town is known for its family-friendly amenities, parks, and recreation facilities, making it a welcoming place for both residents and visitors. The big city amenities meet small town charm in this spot.

Something really special in Innisfail, however, has to be Discovery Wildlife Park. It offers a more personal way to experience animals through guided encounters and up-close moments.

Discovery Wildlife Park is a rescue-based wildlife facility that focuses on caring for animals that can’t be released back into the wild. According to Discovery Wildlife Park, it’s not a traditional zoo. This spot is centred on education, conservation, and creating more meaningful connections between visitors and the animals.

If you want to make a full trip out of it, you can also stay overnight at the campground on-site. There are RV sites and cabins available during the summer, and you can pair your stay with evening wildlife experiences.

This trip is definitely going to be worth the ride.
