How does a wandering spirit choose its haunts? Do they remain close to the site of their demise or are some places simply more attractive to otherworldly denizens? Regardless of which you believe, our city has its fair share of purported hauntings, and this Calgary museum is offering after-dark ghost tours so you can try and see for yourself.
Heritage Park is Calgary’s iconic living museum. Aside from its year-round attractions and exhibits, it’s known to host seasonal events ranging from Murder Mysteries to Christmas Markets. Of course, that doesn’t mean it hasn’t attracted its fair share of supernatural attention.
This spring, you can take a tour of the park’s most haunted spots. To add to the spooky factor, all tours will be happening after the sun goes down.
Here’s everything you need to know about the spring ghost tours at Calgary’s Heritage Park. Maybe you’ll even spot an apparition or two!
About Heritage Park
Calgary’s Heritage Park Historical Village opened on July 1, 1964, and is often described as a living museum. The park’s exhibits cover the period of the early 1860s fur trade all the way to the petroleum and automobile-dominated 1950s. The park’s mission is to document the history of the early West through educational and interactive exhibits.
It sits on a 127-acre peninsula of parkland surrounded by the Glenmore Reservoir. The best way to explore Heritage Park is on foot as you stroll between the over 180 exhibits and service structures — although you can also take a horse-drawn carriage ride. Fifty per cent of the structures you see are relocated and restored originals, while 25 per cent are replicas, and 25 per cent are analogues.
Spring ghost tours
This season, you can tour the most haunted places around Heritage Park as part of its Calgary spring ghost tours. The ordinarily bustling village becomes quiet and deserted after dark, allowing the site’s more spectral residents to come out and play.
Join fellow explorers after the sun goes down for a guided tour of the darkened streets. Learn about the ghostly stories that cling to the village’s history… and potentially dwell within some of its century-old buildings.
The tour begins at the Gazebo in front of the Gasoline Alley Museum, in the park’s front plaza, and will take you through the Historical Village. Make sure to wear comfortable walking shoes and dress for the weather as the tour takes place outdoors with a few inside stops.
