This cozy small town near Montreal will make you feel like you’re experiencing fall in Scotland

29 August 20253 Mins Read

If you’ve ever dreamed of spending fall in Scotland, surrounded by crisp air, crunchy golden leaves, and cozy coffee shops, listen up! This charming small town is just a road trip from Montreal, and with its old stone buildings, riverside strolls, and tree-lined streets glowing with autumn colour, it’s easy to pretend you’ve landed in the Highlands.

Just three hours from Montreal, the small Ontario town of Perth will make you feel like you’ve been whisked away to the cozy, leafy streets of the U.K. And in the fall, when the leaves turn red and gold, the whole place transforms into a dreamy, picture-perfect weekend getaway.

Founded in 1816 by Scottish immigrants, Perth wears its heritage proudly. Even its name is a direct nod to its namesake, Perth in Scotland, and you’ll spot the Celtic influence as soon as you arrive.

The downtown core is lined with historic stone buildings crafted by masons in the 1800s, giving the entire town a timeless, European feel. Add in cobblestone accents, classic lampposts, and a river called the Tay River (just like in Scotland), and it’s no surprise this spot is often described as one of the prettiest small towns in Ontario.

While Perth is charming year-round, autumn is when it really shines. The streets and riverbanks are blanketed in shades of red, gold, and orange, and the cozy glow of the town makes it feel like you’re walking through a fall postcard.

One of the best places to soak it all in is Stewart Park, where the colourful bridge, quiet paths, and river views are especially magical when the leaves start to turn. Grab a cozy scarf and a hot chocolate, and you’ve got the recipe for a picture-perfect afternoon.

For more fall colours, follow the Tow Path to Last Duel Park, or take a little drive to nearby Murphy’s Point Provincial Park, where you’ll find quiet hiking trails, lake views, and even a historic mica mine.

Back in town, there are tons of comfy spots to pop into, like the Gore Street Antique Market for vintage treasures, Perth Chocolate Works for something sweet, and The Perth Cheese Shop to grab a snack for the road.

Local restaurants serve up hearty meals with seasonal ingredients, and some even offer views of the water, which is even more perfect during the fall season.

If you’re visiting in October, you’re in for a treat. Perth gets into the spooky season with a range of events — from ghost walks and pumpkin s to the annual Zombie Walk, where locals go all out with elaborate costumes and creepy vibes.

Just three hours from Montreal, this charming spot makes the perfect weekend escape once the leaves start to turn in September or October.
