This fake Johnny Cage movie should be a real Mortal Kombat movie

16 July 20252 Mins Read

As expected, the trailer puts Cage’s action-movie moves and persona on display. He’s pushing his sunglasses up his face with a raised middle finger aimed at his enemies, and using cheesy martial arts weapons to fend off baddies. It’s clear at times that Urban is being switched out with a stunt double. To cap it all off, the trailer ends in an explosion, before revealing the title card: Uncaged Fury.

Granted, this isn’t an advertisement for Mortal Kombat II — it’s an advertisement for a Mortal Kombat II trailer scheduled to hit the internet at 12 p.m. ET on July 17. (There’s a “Trailer Event Kountdown” on YouTube, starting at 11:05 a.m. ET on the 17th, if you want to wait breathlessly online with other Mortal Kombat fans.)

What we know so far about the film, beyond its release date and the addition of Urban as Cage, is that several key cast members are returning. Shōgun stars Tadanobu Asano and Hiroyuki Sanada are back as Raiden and Scorpion, respectively, along with Joe Taslim as Sub-Zero, Mehcad Brooks as Jax Briggs, Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, and Tan as Cole Young, the original character introduced in the first movie. Josh Lawson and Max Huang are also expected to return as Kano and Kung Lao, despite both characters being killed off in the first film. Newcomers include Adeline Rudolph (Resident Evil, Netflix) as Kitana and bodybuilder Martyn Ford as the iconic Shao Kahn.

And we know that unlike the first movie, this film features an actual Mortal Kombat tournament, where “if Earthrealm loses its 10th consecutive tournament against Outworld, then Shao Kahn will invade Earth and take over,” according to Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon, who also promised “a visual representation of who is winning… It’s not just a tournament for the sake of a tournament. There are huge consequences, so you really are keeping score. And there are a lot of twists in it that keep you on your toes.”

Mortal Kombat 2 is scheduled to be released in theaters on Oct. 24.
