This free Calgary Stampede event is packed with live entertainment, square dancing, and western fun

18 June 20263 Mins Read

Fluor Rope Square transforms Stephen Avenue into one of the most energetic and completely free Stampede experiences in Calgary. Every morning during Stampede week, downtown comes alive with live entertainment, cultural showcases, and hands-on activities, creating a lively street-wide celebration that stretches from block to block,

Chuckwagons, square dancing, and historic downtown tours

According to the Calgary Stampede, things kick off daily at 8:30 a.m. as Stephen Avenue fills with marching bands, dancers, singers, mascots, and face painting stations. And it wouldn’t be a true Stampede event without a pancake breakfast, which will be hosted at the same time, allowing you to grab a bite before heading into a full morning of activities.

At breakfast, you can get bacon pancakes hot off the griddles from the back of authentic chuckwagons. You may even get the opportunity to meet one of the chuckwagon drivers!

One of the most meaningful highlights of each day is the First Nations Parade, which is held at 11:30 a.m. At the parade, members of the Treaty 7 Nations will share their culture through dance, music, and storytelling as they move through the square.

Beyond the breakfast and parade, Fluor Rope Square keeps the energy going with a full lineup of activities throughout the morning. From 10 a.m. to noon, the space will turn into a square dancing hub, where visitors of all ages are invited to join in and learn the steps alongside experienced dancers.

Lucky attendees may also receive free tickets to experience Old Time Rigs, a horse-drawn tour of downtown Calgary. Volunteers hand out tickets, and guests will then be escorted to the departure point for a one-hour ride through the city, offering a nostalgic way to see downtown during Stampede week.

An experience run by volunteers

Fluor Rope Square is powered entirely by volunteers, who dedicate their time to bringing the entire experience to life over the 10 days of Stampede. From welcoming guests to serving up breakfast and helping run activities and contests throughout the day, they are at the heart of everything that happens. Many of the volunteers are longtime Stampede participants, and their energy and friendliness help create the warm, inviting atmosphere that Fluor Rope Square is known for.

So if you are looking to soak up all the Stampede energy without spending a dime, Fluor Rope Square is proof that some of the best parts of the festival are completely free. With plenty of entertainment, food, and cultural celebrations, it’s one of the easiest ways to get into the Stampede spirit this year.

When: Friday, July 3, to Sunday, July 12, 2026
Time: 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Where: Stephen Avenue – 8th Ave. SW, Calgary, Alta.
Cost: Free
