This free Toronto street festival is a celebration of everything garlic

7 August 20253 Mins Read

If you’re anything like me, then you’ll agree that arlic is the absolute best ingredient and is always better in excess. It’s that kind of true love that is being celebrated at a local Toronto festival this fall.

Garlic’s in the air at the Toronto Garlic Festival! Shutting down a Spadina block from Davenport to Dupont on Sunday, September 28, it’s going to be a day filled with garlick-y fun.

A celebration of the strong and flavourful bulbous plant, festival-goers can enjoy some unique activities like the garlic breath contest, where the festival will test the stinkiest breath in parts for a million and award the winner with the strongest mouth, and free garlic shots all day long!

For a bit of physical activity, take your turn at the Garlic Bulb Cracking Contest! Just as the name sounds, participants can test their speed and precision skills by cracking cloves. Twenty-five pounds of garlic will be provided by local farmer Marchand Lamare — who’ll take the smashed bulbs for planting!

Perhaps one of the best parts of the festival for garlic lovers is the many mouth-watering dishes prepared by local chefs and restaurants. Girl dinner is served with garlic poblano and cheese tamale, garlic sliders, and other creations.

Not recommended for the garlic-sensitive patrons, be sure to save room for garlic desserts like dark chocolate and roasted garlic ice cream or garlic chocolate brownies. For drinks? Wash it down with pressed garlic martinis or garlic cask ale!

Don’t forget your tote, either, since the festival will be selling a variety of garlic products. More than just fresh bulbs — prepared goods, drinks, fresh produce, and condiments are ready to be taken home.

Garlic festivities continue with the Garlic Poet Laureate providing free, handwritten poems dedicated to the pungent plant. In between your complimentary shots of free, crushed garlic (with lemon and parsley available), sit down for a Culture Talk and lock in on the garlic lore from historians, comics, farmers, and more.

If you can only visit the festival for a quick time, make sure to swing by at 1 p.m. for the Vampire Costume Contest — where local fanged-friends will have their outfits judged on originality, craftsmanship, and performance.

Can you tell we’re a little bit garlic-obsessed?! Stink it up at the Toronto Garlic Festival in September, we’ll see you there!
