A baguette is so much more than a long, crispy loaf of bread – it’s an icon of the French capital, arguably even an accessory, and now, it’s helped this Paris bistro claim the crown of making the world’s very best sandwich.
Sandwiches are universal – every region on the planet has their own version of putting some delicious, hit-the-spot filling between bread – but has called on its global network of writers to compile a list of the very best, and it was Le Petit Vendôme’s jambon beurre which stole the top spot.
‘[The sandwich here] is a piece of art. They’re made to order and prepared in front of you using Julien Bakery’s award-winning baguettes, gobs of super-fresh craft butter and ribbons of ham straight from the bone,’ writes Paris writer Tina Meyer, ‘It puts the tasteless pink stuff from the supermarket to shame. If you could eat, feel and smell the City of Lights, this would be it.’
Hungry? Same, but there are plenty more brilliant sandwiches on our list to feast your eyes on. In second place, London’s Food and Drink Editor Leonie Cooper handpicked the bacon, scallop and black pudding roll from Epping Forest Oyster Shack, which she described as a ‘simple, but devastatingly effective offering’.
In third place was the Newman’s Jewban from Kush Hialeah in Miami, where a ‘winning combo marries corned beef, swiss cheese, pickles, sauerkraut with juicy roasted pork,’ according to USA editor Virginia Gill.
