Everyone in Ontario loves a little trip to the Muskokas, am I right? Known as cottage country, the area thrives in the summer, but in the winter, the sights are just as gorgeous; you just need to bundle up. Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail is a must-visit in Bracebridge, offering a good workout with sweeping panoramic views as your reward.
Oh, and some of the rocks you’ll see along the hike are some of the oldest in the world. Pretty sweet, huh?
The trail is located in the heart of Muskoka in Bracebridge, Ont. If you’re driving from Toronto, you can expect the journey to take you around two and a half hours.
There is a public parking lot once you arrive, free for anyone to use. Just note that the walk from the lot to the trailhead is about 1 km and mostly uphill, so come prepared.
Exploring Huckleberry Rock Lookout Trail
According to The Township of Muskoka Lakes, “Huckleberry Rock has been well known locally for over 100 years as a magnificent scenic lookout. Rocks on this trail are some of the oldest in the world, well over a billion years old.”
The trail is a two-and-a-half-kilometre loop, a perfect distance for hikers of all skill levels. Navigating the trail is made easier with white ribbons in trees and white marks on rocks as you make your way around the loop.
Once you’ve reached the end, you can kick back and take in the views. The lookout is one of the highest points in the area, and this time of year, you can see snow-covered forests, frozen lakes and rolling hills. The spot is also known for boasting some of the most beautiful sunsets, so if you’re visiting in the evening, try to head over on a clear night.
If there is snow on the ground, bringing snowshoes will make your trek a little less challenging.
Get out that warm coat, some layers, and good hiking boots. Enjoy the views, Ontario.
