This magical beachside waterfall in B.C. cascades over ancient sandstone

13 July 20263 Mins Read

If you’re looking for a beachside gem that’s off the beaten path, Sandcut Beach deserves a spot on any B.C. travel list. Named for its unique sandstone formations, this picturesque, cobbled beach is known as one of the most Instagrammable destinations in the area, though it remains largely hidden compared to famous spots like Sombrio Beach at the famed Juan de Fuca Park.

Where Sombrio Beach’s waterfall is a little more complicated to find, Sandcut Beach has a 23-foot cascading waterfall that’s just steps from the ocean.

Visit Sooke adds that the small but at times powerful waterfall flows directly onto the shoreline, making for a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

Visitors can spot fossilized sea shells revealed little by little as the ancient sandstone erodes. And while you can’t take them home with you, they certainly make for a fantastic story and photo, especially alongside the sweeping views of the Olympic Peninsula.

From the beach parking lot, it’s a quick 10-minute walk to the beachfront, with the trail leading through stunning old-growth rainforest.

The waterfall is situated at the south end of the beach and is easily accessible, according to Tourism Victoria.

Oh, and don’t forget to keep your eyes peeled for marine life, as grey whales, humpback whales, orcas, and seals are commonly spotted here.

Note that Sandcut Beach remains popular amongst locals and visitors alike, with parking filling up quickly on summer days. So if you’re planning on making the trip out this season, make sure you scope out alternative parking options in the area and prepare for fellow beach and waterfall admirers.

Looking for other gems to check out in the area? The communities of Shirley and Sooke are a quick drive away from Victoria, but offer some truly unparalleled outdoor experiences.

Here are some other destinations to add to your itinerary:

How to get there: Take a ferry from West Vancouver or Tsawwassen to Victoria and drive one hour to Shirley via Trans-Canada Highway/BC-1 N., Juan De Fuca Highway/Sooke Road/BC-14 W. and Juan De Fuca Highway/BC-14 W., then drive seven minutes to Sandcut Beach via BC-14 W.
