This massive inland lake in Ontario is known for having the ‘most beautiful waters’ in North America

12 September 20253 Mins Read

It is said that Ontario is home to some of the most breathtaking scenery in North America. You don’t have to believe us, just go see for yourself. Your next scenic adventure awaits at Lake of the Woods, home to some of the “most beautiful waters” in the region.

This all-season adventure includes picturesque islands and long white sand beaches. It’s a sight to behold.

Lake of the Woods & its history

According to the Government of Ontario, the Lake of the Woods is a “large international freshwater system”. It spans across Ontario, Manitoba and Minnesota. It’s over 100 km long and has more than 100,000 km of shoreline.

The Township of Lake of the Woods shares that this pristine body of water was carved into the granite of the Canadian Precambrian Shield by receding glaciers. This natural process took place over 10,000 years ago.

Its underlying bedrock is among the oldest geological formations found on Earth.

“The area was born of the mamouth Lake Agassiz which covered much of Northwestern Ontario, Manitoba and northern Minnesota,” shares the township. “These glacial waters eventually receded, leaving Lake of the Woods as we know it today.”

This geological history not only shaped the region’s landscape but also contributed to its stunning natural beauty. According to Destination Ontario, Lake of the Woods is “home to some of the most beautiful waters and landscapes in North America.” And with a trip to the region, you may also find yourself agreeing with this.

On top of being known for its captivating waters, stunning landscape and wilderness, it’s also Ontario’s second largest inland lake. Though we can go on and on about how wonderful this body of water is, you may be wondering, “What else can I do here besides soaking in the views?”

What to do at Lake of the Woods

Ontario’s Sunset Country Travel Association calls Lake of the Woods “one of the finest multi-species fishing resources in North America”. It’s a fisherman’s dream, known for its spectacular muskie fishing. You’ll find species like walleye, pike, bass, lake trout, perch, crappie and whitefish.

Besides fishing, you can also explore its over 14,500 islands. Just like any outdoor adventure, make sure you’re prepared if you’re out exploring. Nature is beautiful but if you’re not aware of your surroundings, it could get dangerous.

Now, if you’re looking to reconnect with civilization after some time outdoors, several communities are found near the lake. These include Kenora, Sioux Narrows, Nestor Falls and Morson.

These are the perfect pit stops to grab a bite, find some peace along the waterfront, or find solace along a hiking trail. In Kenora, you’ll also find something larger than life – Husky the Muskie! Don’t forget to snap a pic.

This towering aquatic mascot stands tall at a whopping 12 meters and weighs over two tonnes.

If there’s one place you need to plan meticulously ahead for this season, it’s a trip to Lake of the Woods.
