This Ontario town is home to the oldest operating Steamship in North America

11 March 20253 Mins Read

Ontario’s smaller communities offer year-round adventures, but few are as charming as the picturesque town of Gravenhurst.

Named “the gateway to Muskoka Lakes,” Gravenhurst has a rich history in the region, according to Discover Muskoka. If you’re travelling from Toronto, it’ll take you about a two-hour drive north of the city.

Full of history

Gravenhurst was incorporated back in 1887, and it was the first town in Muskoka to do so. Per its official site, the origin of its name is linked to the book “Gravenhurst: Or Thoughts on Good & Evil”.

But before its incorporation, the community was also known as McCabe’s Landing. This was after James McCabe and his wife, who settled in the area, helped lead guiding expeditions on Lake Muskoka.

The town is home to the oldest operating Steamship in North America, the RMS Segwun and The Wenonah II. That, along with the area’s rich history, can be explored at the Muskoka Discovery Centre.

Its Muskoka Wharf also holds a special place in their story: “It was the hub of transportation activities for visitors and residents alike.”

Adventures in Gravenhurst

The best part about Gravenhurst is that you can check out the region over a weekend or even a day trip!

Besides hopping on the steamship for a scenic cruise on Lake Muskoka, you can explore the historic Muskoka Wharf and stroll along its scenic boardwalk. Along the walk, there are waterfront restaurants, cafes, and local shops.

For those looking for more outdoor experiences, this region has lots of areas for hiking, biking, and swimming when the weather feels right.

Brydons Bay Trail is a short, family-friendly trail that wanders through majestic red and white pine. But if you want views, check out Peninsula Trail, which also offers gazebos, benches, and places to enjoy the scenery.

So whether you’re looking for a day trip adventure or looking for a few days in a scenic Ontario town with a rich history, Gravenhurst should definitely be on your list.
