This Ontario town’s trails are compared to snow-covered highways in the winter

19 December 20253 Mins Read

Snowy escapes await at this northern Ontario town, perfect for a weekend getaway. If you love outdoor activities, head up to Hearst, Ont., where you’ll find a true winter wonderland. It’s home to 1,000 kilometres of wide trails, some of which are dedicated to cross-country skiing, snowshoeing and more.

Next stop: Hearst, Ont.

About a 10-hour drive and about an hour and a half flight north of Toronto is Hearst, Ont.

It’s situated along the Mattawishkwia River and boasts of being the “Moose Capital of Canada,” according to Northern Ontario Travel.

The majority of the town residents, 94 per cent in fact, are French-speaking.

Though there are local attractions like Rheault Distillery, the Hearst Ecomuseum, and Théâtre de Hearst, we’re here for the outdoor adventures.

Snowy fun in Hearst

Considering its location, it’s not much of a surprise that during winter, snow blankets the region, creating some of the best conditions for skiing, snowboarding, snowshoeing, and more.

If one thing is for certain, Hearst is the perfect location to enjoy some snowy experiences.

In addition to the 80 kms of trails dedicated to cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, there are over 340 km of groomed trails for snowmobiling.

Through this, you’ll be able to explore some thrilling remote wilderness areas and access northern trails and loop systems, too.

And it gets even better. According to the Town of Hearst, snowmobiles are allowed on the streets of Hearst.

Talk about travelling in style!

Though the winter season is definitely not one to miss in this town, the warmer months are also exciting. It’s just a 30-minute drive away from Fushimi Provincial Park, home to the Achilles Lake Trail and the Fire Tower Trail – a beloved summer adventure.

That being said, Hearst, Ont., is an adventure just waiting to be enjoyed — time to start planning those winter getaways.

We’ll see you there!
